MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today it Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the period of December 16-30,
2002. Loras College basketball player Dwayne Penn (British
Virgin Islands/BVI HS) has been named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week
and Buena Vista University basketball player Amy Meggers
(Manilla, Iowa/I-K-M HS) has been named IIAC Female Athlete
of the Week.
Penn, a junior forward/center, averaged 18.3 points
and 8.0 rebounds per game in three contests during the two-week
period. He connected on 22-of-32 field goals (.688) and 11-of-18
free throws (.611). In an 83-71 victory over #24-ranked Rockford,
he scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds (1-7), and had three
blocks and one assist. Penn scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds
(1-3) and had one steal in an 80-69 victory over DePauw in the opening
round of the Adidas D-3 Shootout in Las Vegas, Nev. In a 75-67 loss
to Aurora at the Adidas D-3 Shootout, he scored 22 points with 12
rebounds (4-8) and four steals.
Meggers, a junior forward, averaged 25 points and
13 rebounds per game in two contests at the Desert Classic in Las
Vegas, Nev. She connected on 19-of-36 field goals (.528) including
3-of-7 three pointers (.429) and also shot 9-of-19 (.474) from the
free throw line. In a 78-54 victory over Widener, she scored 32
points and grabbed 15 rebounds (3-12) in 28 minutes. She shot 12-of-19
from the field and 6-of-11 from the line. She also had one assist
and one steal. In an 89-65 victory over Marion, Meggers scored 18
points, grabbed 11 rebounds (3-8), had two assists, three steals
and a blocked shot to help extend Buena Vista’s winning streak to
five straight.
