MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January
12. Cornell College basketball player Matt Ditch (Center
Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana HS) was named IIAC Male Athlete
of the Week and Wartburg College basketball player Holly
Mohs (Monona, Iowa/MFL-Mar-Mac HS) was named IIAC Female
Athlete of the Week.
Ditch, a junior forward, helped Cornell into sole
possession of first place in the Conference with victories over
Buena Vista University (66-64) and Wartburg College (69-67). He
averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in the two contests
while shooting 54.2 percent from the floor (13-of-24) including
50 percent from behind the arc (5-of-10). Against Buena Vista, Ditch
scored 16 points (6-of-12 from the floor, 4-of-4 from the line),
grabbed three rebounds (0-3), and had two assists and one steal.
Against Wartburg, he scored 19 points (7-of-12 from the floor including
5-of-7 on three-pointers), grabbed eight rebounds (1-7) and had
an assist.
Mohs, a senior center, had two nearly identical
games during the week in which she averaged 18.0 points and 10.0
rebounds per game in victories over Coe College (81-55) and Cornell
College (75-63). During the week she shot 59.1 percent from the
field (13-of-22) and 76.9 percent from the line (10-of-13). In both
games, Mohs scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds (3-7) and had
five assists. Against Coe, in which she shot 7-of-10 from the field
and 4-of-5 from the line, she also had three blocked shots and four
steals. Against Cornell, in which she shot 6-of-12 from the field
and 6-of-8 from the line, she had two blocked shots.
The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week
for the Conference’s three sports in competition during the week.
Ditch and Mohs earned the honors for men’s and women’s basketball,
and Loras College’s Paul Cleary (El Paso, Ill./El
Paso HS) was named IIAC Wrestler of the Week.
Cleary, a senior ranked #1 at 184-pounds, posted
a 5-0 record with three major decisions at the Budd Whitehill Duals
in Williamsport, Pa. He won his first match by major decision over
McDaniel College’s Levi McVey (16-5) and then defeated Case Western
University’s Aaron Yoches, 11-6. He also won by major decision over
Cortland State University’s Justin Armstrong (14-6) and Ithaca College’s
Jeff Edelstein (12-4). Cleary completed the Duals with a victory
over The College of New Jersey’s Josh Pavlov, 11-6. The #5-ranked
Duhawks finished second at the Duals winning its first four matches
– McDaniel (42-3), Case Western (33-9), #19 Cortland State (25-12)
and #13 Ithaca (29-9), before losing its final match to #9 The College
of New Jersey (32-9).
