UPPER IOWA'S MEYERS AND LORAS' JONES NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 26. Upper Iowa University wrestler Brent Meyers (Postville, Iowa/Postville HS) was named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Loras College basketball player Amy Jones (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley HS) was named IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Meyers, a 197-pound senior, posted a 4-0 record with one fall and a double-overtime decision at the Iowa Conference Duals. Ranked third in the nation at 197-pounds, he improved to 14-0 on the season. Meyers defeated the top-ranked wrestler, Alain Djoumessi of Wartburg College in double-overtime and pinned the University of Dubuque’s Steve Wonderlin at 2:54. He also recorded decisions over Central’s Zac Whitehead (6-2) and Cornell’s John Ugaste (5-4). Upper Iowa posted a 3-1 record in the IIAC Duals, with its only defeat coming to top-ranked Wartburg.

Jones, a senior guard, averaged 21.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.5 steals per game in two contests during the week. In victories over Central College (61-42) and Simpson College (72-62), she shot 46.2 percent from the floor (12-of-26) and 90 percent from the free throw line (18-of-20). Against Central, Jones scored 13 points, had eight rebounds (3-5), four steals and two assists. Loras’ victory over Simpson moved the Duhawks into a first place tie with Simpson and was the first Conference loss of the season for the Storm. In 40 minutes, Jones scored a career-high 30 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor and 13-of-15 from the free throw line. She also connected on her only three-point attempt, grabbed nine rebounds (4-5), handed out three assists and had seven steals.

The IIAC also announced its Players of the Week for the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week. Meyers and Jones earned the honors for wrestling and women’s basketball while the following individuals were recognized for their weekly achievements.

Men’s Basketball: Buena Vista University junior forward Scott Weber (Audubon, Iowa/Audubon HS) averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game in two contests during the week. He shot 56.3 percent from the floor (9-of-16) and 89.5 percent from the free throw line (17-of-19) as Buena Vista extended its winning streak to six straight. In an 80-55 victory over Upper Iowa University, he scored 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and 10-of-12 shooting from the line. He also grabbed six rebounds (5-1), had three steals and one assist. In an 81-63 victory over Luther, Weber scored 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 7-of-7 shooting from the line. He grabbed three rebounds (2-1), had three steals and two assists.

Men’s Track and Field: Wartburg College junior Steve Bubb (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) won three events and nearly broke two school records at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Don Bremer Classic. Bubb was just seven-hundredths of a second off the Wartburg record in winning the 200-meter dash (22.94) and was a member of the 4x200 meter relay team that finished six-hundredths of a second off the school record (1:30.73). Bubb also won the 55-meter dash (6.61).

Women’s Track and Field: Upper Iowa University sophomore Mary Streeter (Fayette, Iowa/North Fayette HS) finished third in the weight throw at the University of Northern Iowa Invitational. Her throw of 48’-9½” placed her behind two Division I athletes at the Invitational and provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The mark also broke Upper Iowa’s school record by more than 4½’.
