DUBUQUE'S BOVAN AND WARTBURG'S MOHS NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February 16. University of Dubuque track and field performer DeAndre Bovan (Chicago, Ill./South Shore HS) was named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Wartburg College basketball player Holly Mohs (Monona, Iowa/MFL-Mar-Mac HS) was named IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Bovan, a sophomore, had three top-four performances at the Lewis University Friday Night Series #3 and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with his third place finish in the triple jump (48’-1¾”). He finished second in the long jump and fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. Bovan’s long jump mark of 22’-9½” is ¼” shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. In the 55-meter hurdles, he finished behind runners currently second and fourth in Division III with a time 8.07 seconds.

Mohs, a senior center, averaged 18.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 3.0 steals per game in three contests during the week. She connected on 20-of-40 field goals and all 16 free throw attempts in Wartburg’s victories over Buena Vista (83-71), Loras (78-69) and Dubuque (78-54). Against Buena Vista, she scored 22 points (6-of-10 from the floor, 10-of-10 from the line) and grabbed eight rebounds (2-6), handed out seven assists, had seven steals and two blocks. She scored 23 points (10-of-19 from the floor, 3-of-3 from the line) against Loras to go along with seven rebounds (2-5), nine assists, two steals and two blocks. Mohs finished her week with 11 points (4-of-11 from the field, 3-of-3 from the line), six rebounds (0-6) and seven assists against Dubuque.

The IIAC also announced its Players of the Week for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week. Bovan and Mohs earned the honors for their respective sports while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic achievements.

Men’s Basketball: Cornell College senior center Luke Feddersen (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption HS) averaged 20.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in three Rams’ victories during the week while shooting 64.9 percent from the floor (24-of-37) and 81.3 percent from the free throw line (13-of-16). Against Loras, he scored 28 points, grabbed seven rebounds (6-1) and had one steal. Against Simpson, he scored 13 points, had two rebounds (2-0), one assist and one block. He scored 20 points, had 10 rebounds (2-8), two assists, one steal and one block against Central.

Men’s Tennis: Coe College senior Lucas Elliott (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy HS) went 2-0 during the week with a victory at #4 singles and #2 doubles. In singles, he defeated Wartburg’s Vedran Solaja, 6-0, 6-2. Teamed with Chris McGrath in doubles, he defeated Wartburg’s Blake Flores and Matt Connell, 8-1. In the doubles match, he was 8-for-8 on first serves.

Women’s Track and Field: Wartburg College senior Megan Pagel (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner HS) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the weight throw and the shot put with her performances at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Classic. She finished fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 51’-4¼”, breaking the school record in the event for the third consecutive meet. She finished third in the shot put with a throw of 41’-10”.

Wrestling: Buena Vista University senior Aaron Loewens (Papillion, Neb./Papillion La Vista HS), the second ranked wrestler in the 157-pound weight class defeated Wartburg’s Kevin Bratland, 5-4, to improve to 29-3 on the season. Bratland is ranked fourth in the weight class.
