MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March
9. Wartburg College softball player Deb Schindler (Williamsburg,
Iowa/Williamsburg HS) was named IIAC Female Athlete of the Week
and Loras College baseball player Chet Medinger (Bellevue,
Iowa/Bellevue HS) was named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.
Schindler, a freshman left fielder, hit .395 in
13 games during Wartburg’s trip to Tucson, Ariz. She had 17 hits
in 43 at bats including 10 doubles and two triples (.488 slugging
pct.). Her 10 doubles are just seven shy of placing her in the Knights’
top-10 career list in that category, just 13 games into her collegiate
career. Schindler had five multi-hit contests and drove in seven
runs during the southern trip.
Medinger, a sophomore outfielder, hit .440 in the
final seven games of Loras’ trip to Fort Pierce, Fla. He had 11
hits in 25 at bats, scored seven runs and drove in six runs as the
Duhawks’ posted a 4-3 record. He had four multi-hit games including
3-for-4 performances against Susquehanna University (5-1 win) and
Eastern College (5-4 loss). Against Susquehanna, he had a triple
and scored three runs. Medinger also had a multi-hit performance
against Neumann College (2-3, double, RBI) and Northwestern (Minn.)
College (2-3, 2 runs, RBI).
The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of
the Week for the Conference’s three sports in competition during
the week. Schindler and Medinger earned the weekly honor for softball
and baseball, respectively, and Coe College junior Phil
Williams (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson HS) was named IIAC
Tennis Player of the Week.
Williams posted a 6-0 record during the week including
a 3-0 record in singles play and a 3-0 record in doubles play. At
#3 singles, he posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan
University’s Jason Love and a 6-1, 6-4 win over Carthage College’s
Mike Hicks. He also defeated Grinnell College’s Jim Finnessey (6-0,
6-0) at #1 singles. He teamed with Lucas Elliott at #2 doubles to
post three 8-3 victories.
