MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April
20. Central College softball player Libby Hysell (Colfax,
Iowa/Colfax-Mingo HS) was named IIAC Female Athlete of the Week
and Simpson College baseball player Mike Donnenwerth (Sheffield,
Iowa/SCMT HS) was named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.
Hysell, a senior pitcher, pitched three complete
game shutouts during the week to extend her scoreless innings streak
to 22 straight. She allowed just four hits and three walks (one
intentional) while striking out 27 batters in the three contests.
Hysell allowed one hit and struck out 15 batters in a 4-0 victory
over Dubuque. In a 3-0 victory over Loras, she struck out four,
surrendered one hit and walked two (one intentional). She wrapped
up her week with a two-hit, eight-strikeout performance in a 1-0
victory over Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
Donnenwerth, a junior pitcher/first baseman, hit
.375 (6-for-16) in four games during the week. He scored six runs
and drove in two runs as Simpson split a doubleheader with Buena
Vista and swept a twin-bill from Coe. Donnenwerth was the winning
pitcher in the second game against Coe, striking out six batters,
allowing two runs and five hits in seven innings. Offensively, he
went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI in a 13-12
victory over Buena Vista and 1-for-5 in a 12-9 (9 inning) loss to
BV. He was 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Simpson’s 7-1 win over
Coe and 2-for-3 with a double and run scored in the 5-2 victory
over Coe.
The IIAC also announced its Players of the Week
for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week.
Hysell and Donnenwerth earned the weekly honor for softball and
baseball, respectively, and the following individuals were recognized
for their athletic performances.
Men’s Golf: Buena Vista
University freshman Alex Downing (Lees Summit,
Mo./Lee Summit HS) finished tied for fourth (of 91 golfers) at the
Buena Vista Invitational. He shot a 147 (75-72), six strokes behind
the Tournament Champion. He was the Beavers top scorer in both rounds
and led the team to a fourth place finish.
Men’s Tennis: Coe College
junior Nick Barnes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington
HS) did not lose a point in two matches against Luther during the
week. He posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ryan Sommers at #1 singles.
Barnes and partner Nick Frank defeated the team of Arvid Von Taube/Adam
Strand, 8-0 at #1 doubles.
Women’s Track and Field: Loras
College sophomore Pam Orris (Dubuque, Iowa/Senior
HS) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100-meter
dash running a school-record time of 12.02 seconds in the dual against
Luther.
Men’s Track and Field: Wartburg
College senior Jason Huegel (New Hampton, Iowa/New
Hampton HS) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in
the javelin with a third place finish at the Mt. SAC Relays in California.
His 206’-10” throw was the top mark of any Division II or Division
III athlete in the field. Huegel was also the top Division III athlete
in the discus, finishing 11th (147’-9”).
