BUENA VISTA'S JENSEN AND CENTRAL'S WAGNER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, May 11. Buena Vista University track and field performer Jessica Jensen (Elkhorn, Iowa/Elkhorn-Kimballton HS) was named IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Central College track and field performer Peter Wagner (Des Moines, Iowa/SE Polk HS) was named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week. Both Jensen and Wagner were named IIAC Outdoor Track and Field Most Valuable Performer at the 2003 IIAC Outdoor Championships at Cornell College this past weekend.

Jensen, a senior, placed in four events at the Conference Championships including three first-place finishes. She won her third straight Conference Outdoor title in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 63.23. She also anchored the 4x400 relay team that set an IIAC record in a time of 3:54.76 and won the 400-meter dash in 56.62. Participating in the long jump for the first time in her collegiate career, she finished fourth with a jump of 17’-3.25”.

Wagner, a senior, placed in seven events at the Conference Championship including three first-place finishes. In addition to winning the first annual IIAC Decathlon on May 3, he won his third straight IIAC Outdoor title in the 400-meter hurdles (54.89 seconds) and won the pole vault (14’-2.5”). Wagner also placed second in the long jump (22’-6.5”), fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.59 seconds), fifth in the high jump (6’-5”) and sixth in the triple jump (41’-11.5”).

The IIAC also announced today that Wartburg College freshman catcher Brian Greiner (Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln HS) was named Conference Baseball Player of the Week. Greiner led the Knights to their seventh straight Conference Championship hitting .545 in four games in the Conference Tournament. He went 6-for-11 with two doubles, five runs scored and four RBI in victories over the University of Dubuque (9-1), Loras College (12-7), Cornell College (3-0) and Simpson College (11-6).
