SIMPSON'S CLAIBORNE AND EDGINGTON NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Monday, September 2, 2002. Simpson College golfer Janelle Claiborne (Lake City, Iowa/Lake City HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Simpson soccer player Matt Edgington (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Claiborne, a sophomore, finished tied for fourth at the 74-golfer University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational with a 168, one stroke behind the winner, Carrie Detjen of Wisconsin-Oshkosh who won in a playoff. Claiborne’s 81 on the second day of the Tournament tied Detjen for the day’s low round. As a team, Simpson shot a 697 to finish third in the Tournament that included two teams that participated in the 2002 NCAA Championships (Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Buena Vista).

Edgington, a senior goaltender, posted a 1-0-1 record with two shutouts during the week. He recorded his 18th career shutout with a five save performance on Sunday at Augsburg. The following day, he made nine saves in an overtime tie with St. Thomas (Minn.) in which the Storm played the final 11 minutes of the match a man down.

The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week. Claiborne and Edgington earned the weekly honor for their respective sports and the following individuals were honored in their sports.

Men’s Cross Country: Central College senior Seth Comfort (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola HS) finished first in the 63-runner Ocie Trimble Invitational hosted by Cornell College. Comfort finished the four mile race in 23:02.0, 29.9 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, teammate Chip Daleske (New Providence, Iowa/Eldora-New Providence HS).

Women’s Cross Country: Central College senior Teresa Wauters (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown HS) finished first in the 68-runner Ocie Trimble Invitational. Wauters finished the two mile race in 12:51.0, 3.7 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Coe College’s Jenna Boerboom (Walnut Grove, Minn./Tracy Area HS).

Women’s Soccer: Cornell College senior forward Megan Bachmann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Coronado HS) had a hand in all three goals in the Rams’ season opening victory over Augustana (Ill.). She scored twice, including the game winner, and assisted on the third in a 3-1 victory.

Volleyball: Wartburg College junior outside hitter Dia Dohlman (Eldora, Iowa/Eldora-New Providence HS) was named to the Elmhurst College Invitational All-Tournament Team after finishing the Tournament with 54 kills, 51 digs and 5.5 blocks in 15 games for the eighth ranked Knights. She finished the Tournament with three double-doubles against Wheaton (12 kills, 15 digs), St. Olaf (14 kills, 13 digs) and Elmhurst (17 kills, 17 digs).
