MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, September
8, 2002. Luther College soccer player Katie Pettigrew
(Farmington, N.M./Farmington HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete
of the Week and Loras College football player Jeremy Brown
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete
of the Week.
Pettigrew, a sophomore forward, scored eight goals
in three games during the week. She began the week setting a school
record with seven goals in Luther’s 13-0 victory over Clarke College.
After being held scoreless in a 3-1 Norse win over Minnesota-Morris,
she finished her week with a goal in a 3-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead
College. For her efforts, Pettigrew was named to the Luther Classic
All-Tournament Team.
Brown, a junior tailback, rushed for a career-high
187 yards on 25 carries (7.48 yards per carry). He also rushed for
a career-best four touchdowns (1, 6, 54, 4) in Loras’ 40-23 victory
over Monmouth (Ill.) College. In the game Brown returned four kicks
for 100 yards (25.0 yards per return) including a long of 30 yards.
The IIAC also announced its Players of the Week
for the Conference’s eight sports in competition during the week.
Pettigrew and Brown earned the honors for women’s soccer and football,
respectively, and the following individuals were honored for their
weekly performances.
Women’s Cross Country:
Central College senior Teresa Wauters (Marshalltown,
Iowa/Marshalltown HS) won the 63-runner Mustang Gallop hosted by
Mount Mercy College. She finished in a time of 19:58.70 to win her
second consecutive race of the year, finishing 14.7 seconds ahead
of teammate Katie Elsbernd (Ridgeway, Iowa/Crestwood HS), who finished
second.
Men’s Cross Country:
Simpson College senior Tony Elkman (Des Moines,
Iowa/Lincoln HS) finished fifth at the 62-runner Augustana (Ill.)
College Classic. He finished the four-mile race in 21:03.60, 57
seconds behind the race winner, Augustana’s Randy Bill.
Women’s Golf: Simpson
College sophomore Janelle Claiborne (Lake City,
Iowa/Lake City HS), last week’s IIAC Female Athlete of the Week,
won the 54-golfer Mount Mercy College Invitational with a career-best
73 on Friday. She followed that performance with a fifth place finish
at the 53-golfer Cornell College Invitational on Saturday, shooting
an 83.
Men’s Soccer: Luther
College sophomore forward Eric Henderson (Clive,
Iowa/Valley HS) scored four goals and six assists in three games
during the week. He had three goals and three assists in a 10-1
victory over Clarke. He added a goal and two assists in a 3-0 victory
over Rockford and assisted on Luther’s lone goal in a double-overtime
loss to Nebraska Wesleyan.
Women’s Tennis: Simpson
College freshman Tracy Schiltz (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale
HS) posted a 6-2 record during the week including a 4-0 record at
#3 singles and a 2-2 record at #1 doubles with junior Amanda Byas
(Boone, Iowa/Boone HS). Schiltz recorded singles victories over
Grinnell (6-0, 6-0), Buena Vista (6-0, 6-0), Cornell (6-2, 6-3)
and Coe (6-2, 6-4). In doubles, she had victories over Buena Vista
(8-2) and Coe (8-6).
Volleyball: Loras College
senior outside hitter Alicia Nosbisch (Dyersville,
Iowa/Beckman HS) was named to the Augustana (Ill.) College Invitational
All-Tournament Team finishing with 37 kills, 31 digs and 2.5 blocks
in four matches. In four games against Eureka, she had a double-double
with 11 kills and 11 digs. She also reached double-digits in kills
against Augustana (11 kills) and in digs against Dominican (12).
