MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, September
29. Cornell College tennis doubles team of Lindsey Pfalmer
(Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) and Steph Froehlich
(Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley HS) were named IIAC Female
Athletes of the Week and Coe College football player Fredrick Jackson
(Fort Worth, Texas/Lamar HS) was named IIAC Male Athlete of the
Week.
Pfalmer and Froehlich teamed up to finish second
at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Omni Hotels Midwest
Regional in St. Peter, Minn. After receiving a first round bye,
Pfalmer and Froehlich defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Magie Krueger
and Autum Wilkoswki, 8-3 in the second round. In the quarterfinals,
they defeated Gustavus Adolphus’ Kris Rosborough and Mikaela Schmitt,
8-6, and defeated Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Kristen Mader and Erica Schmelzer,
8-2 in the semifinals. Pfalmer and Froehlich suffered an 8-6 loss
in the finals to Gustavus Adolphus’ Lindsey Palen and Kara Smiley.
Jackson, a senior running back, rushed for 199
yards and five touchdowns on 32 carries in Coe’s 42-13 victory over
Simpson. Playing with a high ankle sprain, he had touchdown runs
of nine yards, two yards (twice), 44 yards and four yards. He also
had two receptions for 21 yards.
The IIAC also announced its Players of the Week
for the eight Conference sports in competition during the week.
Pfalmer, Froehlich and Jackson were recognized in their respective
sports while the following individuals were also honored.
Men’s Cross Country: Buena
Vista University freshman Tim Brink (Storm Lake,
Iowa/Storm Lake HS) won the BVU Invitational in 27:13. He finished
six seconds ahead of second place in the 32-runner field.
Women’s Cross Country: Wartburg
College sophomore Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, Iowa/Shenandoah
HS) won the Roy Griak Invitational Maroon Division (Division II
and III) in 17:37.7. She finished 37 seconds ahead of second place
in the 233-runner field. Her time is the second fastest 5-kilometer
time in Wartburg history.
Golf: Loras College junior
Katrina Hammell (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia HS)
won the Gustavus Adolphus Invitational with a 162 (83-79). She finished
one shot ahead of second place in the 40-golfer field. Hammell’s
second round 79 was one of three rounds under 80 in the tournament,
all of which came on the second day.
Men’s Soccer: Central
College freshman forward Nick Mohwinkle (Hiawatha,
Iowa/Cedar Rapids Kennedy HS) scored two goals and two assists in
Central’s 7-0 victory over Iowa Wesleyan on Friday.
Women’s Soccer: Simpson
College senior goaltender Ashley Wilson (Dallas
Center, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes HS) extended her shutout streak
to 290 minutes with a pair of 1-0 shutout victories this week. She
made two saves in Simpson’s victory over Millikin and 13 saves in
the Storm victory over Loras.
Volleyball: Loras College
senior middle hitter Shannon Leonard (Ottumwa,
Iowa/Ottumwa HS) had 68 kills, hit .492 and had 16 digs, five aces
and 26 blocks (15 solo) as Loras swept all five matches in which
it played. Leonard led the Duhawks’ to a 4-0 record at the University
Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational and was named to the All-Tournament
Team.
