CENTRAL'S HANCOCK AND WARTBURG'S KING NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

October 28, 2002

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 27. Central College volleyball player Kristin Hancock (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Wartburg College football player Vince King (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Hancock, a freshman outside hitter, had three double-doubles in five matches during the week, all against teams ranked in the top-11 of American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll. She finished the week with 73 kills, four aces, 70 digs and eight blocks (one solo). She began the week with a 20-kill, 11-dig, five-block performance in a 3-1 victory over Wartburg. At the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational, she led Central to a 3-2 victory over Wisconsin-River Falls with 20 kills, 36 digs and three blocks. In a 3-0 loss to Trinity (Texas) University, she recorded her third double-double of the week with 19 kills and 15 digs. Playing injured in the final two matches of the week, she had 13 kills and seven digs in a 3-0 loss to Wartburg and in just one game of a 3-0 loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater, she had one kill and one dig.

King, a junior defensive end, led Wartburg’s defense in a 14-0 victory over Central, marking the first time since 1981 that the Dutch were shutout at home and giving Wartburg its first regular season victory at Central since 1975. In the contest, King had 11 tackles (five solo), 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He anchored the Knights defense that limited Central to 194 total yards including just 74 on the ground and allowed just three drives inside the 30-yard line.

The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s four sports in competition during the week. Hancock and King earned the honors for volleyball and football, respectively, while the following individuals were also recognized for their athletic achievements.
