LORAS' WIESER AND LUTHER'S HARTMAN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 10. Loras College soccer player Michelle Wieser (Dubuque, Iowa/Senior HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Luther College soccer player Jordan Hartman (Iowa City, Iowa/City HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Wieser and Hartman both played integral roles in their respective teams’ capturing the Iowa Conference soccer championships. In three Tournament games, Wieser had a goal and four assists including assists on both goals in the Duhawks’ 2-1 overtime victory over Cornell in the Championship Match to clinch Loras’ second straight Iowa Conference title. In a 3-0 semifinals victory over Simpson, she also chipped in two assists. Her lone goal of the week came in an opening round victory over Dubuque.

Hartman scored both goals in Luther’s 2-0 victory over Wartburg in the Championship Match as the Norse captured their sixth Iowa Conference title in seven years. Hartman broke a scoreless tie with his goal at 67:45. Just over three minutes later, at 70:50, he scored an insurance goal.

The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week for the Conference’s four sports in competition during the week. Wieser and Hartman earned the honor for women’s and men’s soccer while the following individuals were honored for their athletic achievements.

Football: Buena Vista University sophomore quarterback Eric Wiebers (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig HS) had 468 yards of total offense in the Beavers’ 28-20 victory over Dubuque. Wiebers completed 30-of-52 passes for 431 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 37 yards on seven carries. In the contest, he set four school records including most passing yards in a game, most touchdown passes in a game, most completions in a game and most total yards in a game. Three of the four records he set were previously held by his father, Rollie (touchdown passes, completions, and total yards).

Volleyball: Wartburg College senior outside hitter Jamie Garbes (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton HS) led the Knights’ to their first Iowa Conference Tournament title and a share of the Conference championship. In 15 games, including 11 at the Conference Tournament, she had 51 kills (.242 hitting percentage), three assists, six aces, 43 digs and three blocks. Garbes posted a double-double in the regular season finale against Simpson with 10 kills and 12 digs, and also had a double-double in the Tournament Semifinals against Simpson with 21 kills and 14 digs.
