CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . .The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Buena Vista University basketball player Amy Meggers (Manila,
Iowa/I-K-M HS) and Cornell College basketball player Matt
Ditch (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana HS) were
named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending
Sunday, January 4.
Meggers, a senior forward, scored 28 points and
grabbed 16 rebounds (3-13) in the Beavers’ 85-73 victory over Wartburg
College. Meggers shot 62.5 percent from the field on 10-of-16 shooting.
Ditch, a senior forward, averaged 27.0 points and
9.5 rebounds in two games during the week. In a 96-88 overtime loss
to the University of Dubuque on Friday, he scored 30 points on 10-of-20
shooting from the floor including 4-of-9 from behind the three-point
arc. He also grabbed seven rebounds (2-5), had two steals and one
blocked shot. On Saturday, in a 104-100 triple-overtime victory
over Loras College, Ditch scored 24 points (6-of-18 shooting), grabbed
12 rebounds (4-8) and dished out four assists. His three-pointer
with seven seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 71 and
sent it to overtime. Ditch then sealed the victory with two free
throws with nine seconds remaining in the third overtime.
The IIAC also announced its Players of the Week
for the Conference’s three sports in competition during the week.
Meggers and Ditch earned the weekly honors for women’s and men’s
basketball, and Wartburg College wrestler Ryan Sturm
(Armstrong, Iowa/Emmetsburg HS) was named IIAC Wrestler of the Week.
Sturm, a junior, went 4-0 at 184-lbs. at the Lone
Star Duals in Dallas, Texas with a technical fall and two major
decisions. He won matches by major decision over Central Oklahoma
University’s Bryan Tapley (16-5) and University of Nebraska-Kearney’s
Trevel Dalgnev (12-1). Central Oklahoma is the defending Division
II National Champion. Sturm also defeated Daniel Contreras of Division
I Cal State-Fullerton by technical fall (22-4) and won one match
by forfeit, vs. Bacone College.
