BUENA VISTA'S MAGUIRE AND WARTBURG'S CARTER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University basketball player Katie Maguire (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor HS) and Wartburg College wrestler Akeem Carter (Waterloo, Iowa/West HS) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 11.

Maguire, a sophomore guard, averaged 16.5 points, 5.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in Conference victories over Cornell College (94-56) and Coe College (91-56). In the two contests, she shot 72.2 percent from the floor (13-of-18). Against Cornell, Maguire scored 14 points (6-of-9 shooting), dished out nine assists, had three steals and grabbed two rebounds (2-0). She scored 19 points to go along with four rebounds (0-4), two assists and two steals against Coe while shooting 7-of-9 from the floor (77.8 percent).

Carter, a sophomore, defeated two ranked opponents at 197-pounds during the week. In the Knights’ 28-3 victory over #12-Simpson College, Carter defeated sixth-ranked Bart George, 5-1. The team victory was Wartburg’s 80th straight against Iowa Conference schools. Carter also defeated University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Yan White (5-3), the top ranked 197-pound wrestler. Wartburg defeated #6-Wisconsin-Platteville 37-4.

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of the Week for the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week. Maguire and Carter received the weekly honors for women’s basketball and wrestling, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Men’s Basketball: Central College senior guard/forward Scott Veldhuizen (Eddyville, Iowa/Eddyville-Blakesburg HS) averaged 25.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during the week while shooting 53.5 percent from the floor (23-of-43). In Central’s 67-54 loss to Loras College, Veldhuizen scored a team-high 28 points (13-of-25 shooting), grabbed nine rebounds (4-5), and had one assist and one block. The following night, he scored a game-high 22 points (10-of-18 shooting), grabbed 10 rebounds (2-8), had four assists, two steals and one blocked shot as Central won its first Conference game of the season, a 70-64 victory over the University of Dubuque.

Women’s Swimming & Diving: Loras College junior Rebekah Reid (Caledonia, Ill./Rockford Guilford HS) won two events and finished third in another in the Duhawks’ 148-89 victory over Luther College. Reid won the 500-yard (5:36.83) and 1000-yard (11:18.38) freestyle events, and finished third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:33.75).

Men’s Swimming & Diving: Coe College senior Dustin Briggs (Jefferson, Iowa/Jefferson-Scranton HS) won three times, finished second twice and third once in dual meets against Colorado College and Colorado School of Mines. In a 115-100 loss to Colorado College, Briggs swam a season-best 50.64 seconds in winning the 100-yard freestyle. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:45.09) and was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished second (1:32.11). In a 169-71 loss to Division II Colorado School of Mines, Briggs won the 50-yard (23.15) and 100-yard (51.51) freestyle. He was a member of the second-place finishing 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.58) and finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.12).
