BUENA VISTA'S MEGGERS AND SIMPSON'S MANNY NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University basketball player Amy Meggers (Manilla, Iowa/I-K-M HS) and Simpson College wrestler Clint Manny (Peru, Iowa/Winterset HS) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 18.

Meggers, a senior forward, averaged 25.3 points and 10.0 rebounds in three games during the week. She shot 51.5 percent from the floor (34-of-66) in an overtime loss to Loras and victories over Simpson and Central, which helped the Beavers regain first place in the Conference. She scored 39 points, grabbed 10 rebounds (1-9), and had four assists and three blocked shots in a 78-73 loss to Loras. In a 94-91 victory over Simpson, Meggers scored 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds (5-6) and had two blocks. She finished the week with 21 points, nine rebounds (3-6) and two steals in a 76-67 win over Central.

Manny, a junior, went 6-0 at 149-pounds at the Cliff Keen/National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals and was named the Division III Outstanding Wrestler. Manny improved to 29-1 on the season and reached the 100 career-win plateau with his six victories which included two major decisions. He defeated Augustana (Ill.)’s Ryan McMurray (3-0), Augsburg’s Josh Erlandson (9-2), Buena Vista’s Mike Vagher (4-0), Luther’s Matt Pyle (8-0), Delaware Valley’s Jeremy Messenger (7-5, ot) and College of New Jersey’s David Icenhower (8-0). Simpson, the eighth seed in the National Duals, finished third.

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of the Week in the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week. Meggers and Manny earned the weekly honor in the women’s basketball and wrestling, respectively, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Men’s Basketball: Buena Vista University senior forward Scott Weber (Audubon, Iowa/Audubon HS) averaged 19.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists in three games during the week as the Beavers remained unbeaten in Conference play. In an 81-79 overtime victory over Loras, he scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds (1-8). He had 11 points, eight rebounds (4-4), seven assists and three blocked shots in a 69-66 victory over Simpson. Weber finished the week with 19-point, seven-rebound (3-4), five-steal performance in a 71-59 victory over Central.

Women’s Swimming & Diving: Coe College freshman Naomi Fottral (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie HS) had seven top-10 finishes at the Grinnell Invitational. She won the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.01) and swam a 1:01.93 split for the winning 400-yard medley relay team. She was a member of the second-place 200-yard medley relay (1:57.96), swimming a 27.36 split. Fottral had two third-place finishes - the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.72) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:47.15, 26.53 split). She also finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.67) and 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.32).

Men’s Swimming & Diving: Loras College freshman Brian Johns (Williamsburg, Iowa/Williamsburg HS) won three events in the Duhawks double-dual victory over Beloit and Marquette. He won the 50-yard freestyle in 27.06 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.85. Johns also swam the first leg for the winning 200-yard medley relay team that finished in 2:01.96.
