CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Simpson College swimmer Dana Kuiken (Fairfield,
Iowa/Fairfield HS) and Central College track and field performer
Cale Van Genderen (Lynnville, Iowa/Lynnville-Sully
HS) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the
period ending Sunday, January 25.
Kuiken, a senior, won six times in two dual meets
during the week. In a 103-70 loss to Coe, she finished first in
the 50-yard freestyle (26.55), the 100-yard freestyle (58.18) and
the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.90). The following night, in a 114-67
victory over Buena Vista, Kuiken won the 50-meter freestyle (29.33),
the 100-meter freestyle (1:06.42) and the 100-meter breaststroke
(1:19.21).
Van Genderen, a junior, automatically qualified
for the NCAA Championships in the high jump with a school-record
jump of 6’10¾” at the Central Invitational. He broke the
old school record by ¾”. VanGenderen also finished 10th in
the long jump (19’ 8 ¾”).
The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of
the Week for the Conferences seven sports in competition during
the week. Kuiken and Van Genderen earned the weekly honors in women’s
swimming and men’s track, while the following individuals were recognized
for their athletic performances.
Women’s Basketball: Buena
Vista University junior center Kristina Kapler (Cresco,
Iowa/Crestwood HS), averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game
in victories over Upper Iowa (76-54) and Luther (84-67) during the
week. She shot 76.2 percent from the floor (16-of-21) during the
two contests including a 7-for-7 performance against Luther in which
she scored 21 points, grabbed four rebounds (2-2), had one assist
and one blocked shot. Against Upper Iowa, Kapler scored 18 points
(9-of-14 shooting), grabbed seven rebounds (3-4), had three steals,
two assists and one block.
Men’s Basketball: Cornell
College senior guard Andy Fox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Davenport
Assumption HS) averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists
in two games during the week. In an 85-61 victory over Central,
he shot 6-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from behind the
3-point arc for 16 points. He also grabbed four rebounds (1-3),
had four assists and three steals. The following night, Fox scored
21 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-8 from behind the
arc. He grabbed six rebounds (0-6) and had five assists in a 73-69
victory over Simpson.
Women’s Indoor Track & Field: Loras
College junior Pam Orris (Dubuque, Iowa/Senior
HS) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a second-place
finish in the 55-meter dash at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational
in a time of 7.21 seconds. She set a school-record, finishing third
in the 200-meter dash, in a time of 25.89 seconds. Orris was also
a member of two relay teams – the 4x200 relay team which finished
second (1:48.51) and the 4x400 relay team which finished third (4:06.73).
Men’s Swimming & Diving: Loras College
sophomore Drew Sodey (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa HS)
won three events in a 114-107 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater.
He won the 50-yard freestyle (22.76), the 100-yard freestyle (50:16)
and was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:19.46).
Wrestling: Buena Vista
University junior heavyweight Adam Buthe (Sioux
City, Iowa/East HS) went 4-0 at the Iowa Conference duals with three
falls. He pinned Coe’s Nick McTee, the fifth ranked wrestler in
the nation, at 0:56. Buthe also pinned Luther’s Nate Kuisle (2:24)
and Loras’ Eric Daughetee (3:52) in addition to a forfeit victory.
