SIMPSON'S CAPPER AND WARTBURG'S MEHLERT NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Simpson College track and field performer Jessica Capper (Washington, Iowa/Washington HS) and Wartburg College wrestler Bart Mehlert (LaPorte City, Iowa/Union HS) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February 1.

Capper, a senior, won the shot put and weight throw at the Cornell Quadrangular. She provisionally qualified for the National Championship and set a school record with throw of 48-2½ in the weight throw, breaking her own school record by over seven feet. Capper also won the shot put with a throw of 41-10¾.

Mehlert, a junior, improved to 23-0 on the season with victories at 149-pounds against #2-Augsburg and #8-Luther. He recorded a major decision over Augsburg’s Josh Erlandson (19-5) and pinned Luther’s Matt Pyle (2:25).

The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week for the seven Conference sports in competition during the week. Capper and Mehlert earned the weekly honor in women’s track and wrestling, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Women’s Basketball: Loras College senior center Alicia Davis (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead HS) averaged 24.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in three games during the week. She shot 73.7 percent from the floor (28-of-38) and 81.8 percent from the free throw line (18-of-22). In an 81-63 loss to Buena Vista, Davis scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds (3-3), becoming the first Loras player to surpass the 900 career rebound plateau. She scored 27 points, grabbed 16 rebounds (6-10), blocked six shots and had two steals in a 73-65 victory over Cornell. In a 75-41 victory over Coe, she scored 24 points, grabbed seven rebounds (4-3) and blocked four shots.

Men’s Basketball: Cornell College senior forward Matt Ditch (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana HS) averaged 26.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in three contests during the week. He shot 56.8 percent from the field (21-of-37) and 88.2 percent from the free throw line (30-of-34). In an 82-59 victory over Luther, he scored 28 points, grabbed five rebounds (2-3) and had four assists. He scored 25 points, grabbed six rebounds (1-5) and had two assists in an 88-76 loss to Loras. Ditch finished the week with 25 points and 11 rebounds (4-7) in a 75-64 victory over Dubuque.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field: Simpson College junior Ross Parker (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola HS) won the shot put and weight throw at the Cornell Quadrangular. He provisionally qualified for the National Championship and set a school record with a throw of 52-8¾ in the shot put, breaking his own school record by nearly two-and-a-half feet. Parker had a mark of 49-3½ in the weight throw, breaking his own school record by three-and-a-half feet.

Women’s Swimming: Loras College freshman Tasia Guiter (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa HS) won two events and finished third in another in the Duhawks’ 108-73 dual meet victory over Morningside. She set a school record in the 100-yard backstroke, winning the event in a time of 1:02.79. Guiter finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (26.45) and was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay (2:02.40).

Men’s Tennis: Coe College senior Nick Barnes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS) went 3-0 during the week with one victory at #1 singles and two victories at #1 doubles. In singles, he defeated Nebraska Wesleyan’s Jamie Tallman, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2. In doubles, with partner Adam Elliott, Barnes recorded an 8-4 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan’s Jeff Salem/Andy Huls; and an 8-2 victory over Wartburg’s Mark Giesmann/Nick Schauf.
