CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Coe College baseball player Jon Schroeder (Cedar
Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS) and Simpson College softball player
Bradi Smith (Lacona, Iowa/Southeast Warren HS)
were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period
ending Sunday, March 14.
Schroeder, a senior outfielder, hit .577 (15-for-26)
with nine doubles and 11 RBI in eight games during the week. He
has a nine-game hitting streak and has at least one double in six
straight contests. Schroeder led the Kohawks to a 7-1 record during
the week as he scored 12 runs, and had five multi-hit and four multi-RBI
performances. He went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and
two doubles in Coe’s 8-5 victory over Drew. In a 12-5 victory over
Monmouth (Ill.) he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, two
doubles and a home run. Schroeder recorded two hits in contests
against Pitt-Bradford, St. Joseph’s (Maine) and Wentworth. He drove
in three runs in a 9-8 victory over St. Joseph’s, scored two runs
and drove in two runs in a 14-6 victory over Pitt-Bradford, and
scored twice in an 8-4 victory over Wentworth.
Smith, a sophomore pitcher, posted a 5-0 record
with a 0.78 earned run average in five games during the week. She
surrendered 17 hits and four runs (three earned) in 27 innings while
striking out 38 and walking just three. Smith pitched complete games
in three of her four starts, and pitched three innings of hitless
and scoreless relief in the Storm’s 12-inning victory over McKendree.
In addition to the victory in relief, Smith defeated The College
of New Jersey twice, striking out a combined 18 batters and allowing
just two runs in 14 innings. She also picked up victories against
#4 Muskingum (4-2), and Kean (8-0), striking out 11 batters in five
innings against Kean.
The IIAC also announced on Monday that Coe College
senior Nick Barnes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington
HS) was named IIAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the seventh
time in as many weeks this year.
Barnes posted a 6-0 record during the week and
once again recorded a singles and doubles victory over a Division
I opponent. In singles, he defeated Drew’s J.D. Spina (7-5, 6-1),
Division I Sacred Heart’s Steven George (6-1, 6-2) and Wesleyan
(Conn.)’s Dan Yeoman (6-4, 6-2). In doubles with partner Adam Elliott,
Barnes recorded an 8-2 victory over Drew’s Spina/Julian Fuller,
an 8-3 victory over Sacred Heart’s George/Jeff Bowers and an 8-2
victory over Wesleyan’s Yeoman/Evan Rhodes.
