CENTRAL’S VAN GENDEREN AND LORAS’ HUTCHINS NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Central College track and field performer Cale VanGenderen (Lynnville, Iowa/Lynnville-Sully HS) and Loras College track and field performer Rachel Hutchins (Bernard, Iowa/Cascade HS) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 28.

VanGenderen, a junior, had three top-10 finishes at the Truman State Open. He won the high jump with an NCAA automatic qualifying jump of 6-11.5, breaking the 34-year-old venue record by a half inch. He won the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 46-3.5 and finished eighth in the long jump with a mark of 21-6.

Hutchins, a senior, was a four-time winner at the Monmouth (Ill.) Invitational, leading the Duhawks’ to a first-place team finish. She provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100-meter hurdles with a winning time of 14.91 seconds. She also won the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.33) and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay (49.40) and 4x400 relay (4:05.97) teams.

The IIAC also announced its Players of the Week for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week. VanGenderen and Hutchins earned the weekly honors for track and field, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Baseball: Buena Vista University junior shortstop Brian Ricken (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown HS) hit .583 (14-of-24) in six games during the week. He had five multi-hit games, including three three-hit performances. He opened the week with a 2-for-4 performance in a 7-2 loss to Bryan then went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in an 8-6 victory over Oglethorpe. In a doubleheader split with Berry, Ricken went 3-for-7, including 2-for-3 with a run scored in a 7-4 loss and 1-for-4 with an RBI in a 7-6 win. He finished his week with matching 3-for-4, two runs scored performances in a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee Temple. He also drove in two runs in the second game, a 9-4 victory.

Softball: Loras College junior catcher Michele Kearney (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana HS) hit .571 (8-for-14) in five games during the week including two three-hit performances. In a 9-8 victory over Clarke, she went 3-for-5 and scored one run. She was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in a 7-0 victory over Dominican (Ill.). She also had single hits in a 1-0 loss to Franciscan and a 12-1 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran.

Men’s Golf: Central College senior Alex Schenfeld (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola HS) won the Central Dutch Classic with a two-over-par 146. He opened the two-day tournament shooting par (72) on the first day then closed with a 74 on the second day to win by two strokes in the 78-golfer field.

Men’s Tennis: Coe College senior Nick Barnes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS) went 4-0 during the week including two victories at #1 singles and two victories at #1 doubles. In Coe’s 7-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan, the 9th-ranked team in the Central Region, Barnes defeated Mike Walz in singles play (6-1, 6-1) and teamed with Adam Elliott to defeat Walz/Jason Love in doubles (8-4). Walz is ranked 14th in the region and the team of Walz/Love is ranked 10th in the region. In a 7-0 victory over Grinnell, Barnes defeated Jim Fennessey in singles play (6-1, 6-1) and Barnes/Elliott defeated Fennessey/Rick Fenbert, 8-3.
