COE’S RENNER AND CENTRAL’S SCHULTZ NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Coe College baseball player Will Renner (Maquoketa, Iowa/Maquoketa HS) and Central College track and field performer Lindsay Schultz (Barnum, Iowa/Manson Northwest Webster HS) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 4.

Renner, a sophomore first baseman, hit .600 (9-for-15) in four games during the week and has now posted six straight multi-hit games. He had four home runs and a double (1.467 slugging pct.), drove in 13 runs and scored seven times. In a double-header split with Central, he went 4-8 with five runs scored, nine RBI, three home runs and a double. In Coe’s 22-3 victory, he went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, four RBI and three runs scored. In a 13-12, eight inning loss, he went 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI. Renner went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Coe’s 18-8 win over Grinnell. In the second game of the Grinnell double-header, an 8-7 Kohawk victory, he went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Schultz, a senior, automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon after winning the event at the Central Heptathlon with 4,609 points, 49 points more than the automatic qualifying mark. Her marks in each of the seven events were among the top-three including having the top marks in the shot put (11.48 meters), the long jump (5.18 meters) and the javelin (38.40 meters). She had the second-best mark in the 100-hurdles (15.40 seconds) and the 800-meter run (2:30.59). Her high jump (1.46 meters) and 200-meter dash (27.34 seconds) marks were the third-best among heptathlon competitors. Schultz also competed in the javelin at the Central Invitational, finishing fourth with a throw of 33.02 meters.

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of the Week in the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week. Renner and Schultz earned the weekly honor for baseball and women’s track, while the following individuals were recognized for the athletic performances.

Men’s Golf: Central College senior Kyle Matzen (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola HS) finished tied for second (of 100-golfers) at the Augustana (Ill.) Invitational. He finished the two-day tournament with a 2-under-par 142 (71-71), two strokes off the lead.

Softball: Cornell College junior center fielder Alex Myers (Wrightwood, Calif./Serrano HS) hit .412 (14-for-34) in eight games during the week to extend her hit streak to 16 games. Among her 14 hits were four doubles and two triples for a .648 slugging percentage to go along with nine runs scored and eight runs batted in. She had five multi-hit contests including a 3-for-7 performance in an 8-7, 13 inning loss to Monmouth (Ill.). She had three 2-for-4 performances – in a 7-3 loss to Monmouth (also drove in two runs), in a 5-4 victory over Clarke (two doubles, two runs scored) and in a 5-3 loss to Simpson. Her final two-hit performance was a 2-for-3, two run scored outing in a 4-3 win over Iowa Wesleyan.

Men’s Tennis: Coe College senior Nick Barnes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS) posted victories in the Kohawks’ 6-1 victory over #22-ranked DePauw. In singles, Barnes defeated Marshall Kuresman, the 18th-ranked player nationally and fourth-ranked player regionally, 6-4, 6-2. In doubles Barnes teamed with Adam Elliott to record an 8-4 victory over DePauw’s Darren Ebloui/Jeff Zanchelli.

Men’s Outdoor Track & Field: Central College junior Cale Van Genderen (Lynnville, Iowa/Lynnville-Sully HS) won three events at the Central Invitational highlighted by his NCAA provisional qualifying performance in the triple jump with a jump of 47-2.25. He also won the high jump with a mark of 6-8 and the long jump with a mark of 21-9.
