CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Simpson College cross country runner Nick Bowerman (Dubuque,
Iowa/Hempstead HS) and Cornell College tennis player Marie
Schutte (Boone, Iowa/Boone HS) were named Conference Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, September
7.
Bowerman, a junior, won the Mount Mercy College
Mustang Gallop in a time of 27:29, besting the 48-runner field by
34 seconds. His victory is believed to be the first by a Simpson
runner since the mid-1990s.
Schutte, a sophomore, posted a 4-0 record during
the week including two victories at #1 singles and two victories
at #1 doubles. In singles she defeated Simpson’s Carrie Brannen
(6-3, 6-4) and Central’s Emilie Larson (6-1, 6-2). She teamed with
junior Steph Froehlich to record an 8-4 victory over Simpson’s Tracy
Schiltz/Emily DeBolt and an 8-2 victory over Central’s Larson/Lindsey
Yuska.
The Iowa Conference also announced on Monday its
Players of the Week for seven Conference sports in competition during
the week. The first two weeks of the football season will be combined
into one award selection, announced on Monday, September 15. Bowerman
and Schutte earned the weekly honors in their respective sports
while the following individuals were recognized for their weekly
performance.
Women’s Cross Country: Luther
College junior Natalie Retrum (Blanchardville,
Wis./Pecatonica HS) won the St. Mary’s (Minn.) Invitational in a
time of 19:18. She defeated teammate Erin Dunham by 61 seconds.
Women’s Golf: Buena Vista
University senior Betsy Hall (Lincoln, Neb./East
HS) won the Northwestern (Iowa) Invitational with a 6-over-par 78
and finished second at the BVU Beaver Classic with a 7-over-par
79, one stroke behind the medalist.
Women’s Soccer: Luther
College junior Katie Pettigrew (Farmington, N.M./Farmington
HS) scored four goals and added two assists in victories over Maryville
(Mo.) University and Concordia-Moorhead University. She netted four
goals and an assist in a 6-0 victory over Maryville and registered
an assist in a 2-1 victory over Concordia-Moorhead.
Men’s Soccer: Simpson
College sophomore forward Angel Salcido (El Paso,
Texas/LPI HS) scored five goals and added an assist in the Storms’
11-2 victory over California Tech, setting the school record for
most goals in a match.
Volleyball: University
of Dubuque sophomore setter J Browning (Red Oak,
Iowa/Red Oak HS) was named to the Wisconsin-Platteville All-Tournament
Team after leading the Spartans to a 3-1 record at the Tournament.
She averaged 11.0 assists, 1.71 digs and 0.71 kills per game in
14 games in the Tournament.
