WARTBURG'S MOEN AND LUTHER'S BLOM-SKRADE NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College cross country runner Josh Moen (Fairbank, Iowa/Wapsie Valley HS) and Luther College tennis player Miriam Blom-Skrade (Neenah, Wis./Neenah HS) have been named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, September 28.

Moen, a junior, finished second in the 400-runner Maroon Race (Division II and III) at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. His time of 25:10 is among the top-five times in school history and was 15 seconds behind the winner. Wartburg finished seventh in the Maroon Race, second among Division III schools.

Blom-Skrade, a senior, won the consolation championship at the ITA Midwest Regional Invitational at Gustavus Adolphus College. After falling in three sets in the opening round to eventual quarterfinalist Amanda Santa Romana of Carleton College (6-3, 4-6, 7-5), she lost just 14 points in six matches en route to the consolation championship. Blom-Skrade defeated University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Katie Steffes (6-1, 6-1), College of St. Catherine’s Shelly Bebler (6-2, 6-0), University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Maggie Seitz (6-3, 6-3), Wheaton (Ill.) College’s Karly Olson (6-0, 6-1) and Carleton’s Abby Beggs (6-1, 6-2).

The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week for the Conference’s eight sports in competition during the week. Moen and Blom-Skrade earned the weekly award for their respective sports while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Women’s Cross Country: Luther College junior Natalie Retrum (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonia HS) led the Norse to the team title of the University of Minnesota’s Roy Griak Invitational Division III race. Retrum finished fifth of 338 runners. Her time of 19:02 was 26 seconds behind the winner.

Football: Coe College senior running back Matt Wycoff (Marion, Iowa/Marion HS) rushed for 285 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries in the Kohawks’ 42-34 victory over Upper Iowa. He scored on rushes of 66 yards, four yards and two yards. The 285 rushing yards is the sixth-highest single game total in Coe history. Wycoff also caught two passes for 24 yards, finishing the game with 309 all-purpose yards.

Women’s Golf: Buena Vista University senior Jennifer Einck (Primghar, Iowa/South O’Brien HS) shot a 169 (90-79) on the opening weekend of the IIAC Women’s Golf Championship to hold a one stroke lead heading into this weekend’s final two rounds. The Beavers in a first place tie after 36 holes.

Women’s Soccer: Luther College junior forward Katie Pettigrew (Farmington, N.M./Farmington HS) scored four goals and added an assist in Luther’s 6-0 victory over Central.

Men’s Soccer: Buena Vista University sophomore goaltender Daniel Padilla (Papillion, Neb./Papillion-LaVista HS) surrendered just one goal in three games during the week. He registered back-to-back 3-0 shutouts over Presentation College (one save) and the University of Dubuque (four saves) before surrendering a goal in a 3-1 victory over Clarke College. Padilla made 10 saves during the week to finish with a .909 save percentage and a 0.33 goals against average. He also scored a goal on a penalty kick and recorded an assist against Clarke.

Volleyball: Simpson College junior middle hitter/outside hitter Shannon Stewart (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale HS) averaged 3.63 kills, 1.21 digs and 0.79 blocks per game in 19 games during the week. She hit .288 in five matches including a Conference victory over the University of Dubuque and four matches at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational.
