WARTBURG'S KELLEY AND CENTRAL'S BRAND NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College football player Cody Kelley (Tipton, Iowa/Tipton HS) and Central College volleyball player Catie Brand (Davenport, Iowa/North HS) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 12.

Kelley, a senior wide receiver/defensive back, tied a school record with his 20th career interception and had the school’s best receiving day since 2000 in Wartburg’s 47-15 victory over previously unbeaten Loras College. Kelley had 10 catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns (5-yards, 31-yards) to go along with two interceptions and three tackles (two solo). He finished the contest with 191 all-purpose yards (167 receiving, 17 on interception returns and 7 on punt returns).

Brand, a senior right-side hitter, was named to the Central Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the Dutch to a 4-0 record in the Tournament. For the week, she hit .345 and averaged 3.93 kills, 1.00 digs and 0.67 blocks per game in five matches (15 games). Brand hit over .400 in four of five matches including victories over Upper Iowa University (.615), Augustana (Ill.) College (.500), Bethel (Minn.) College (.304) and Monmouth (Ill.) College (.480). She also reached double-digits in kills against Bethel (18) and Monmouth (14).

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s seven sports in competition during the week. Kelley and Brand received the weekly honor in football and volleyball, respectively, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Men’s Cross Country: Loras College junior Dan Winder (Waterloo, Iowa/West HS) finished second of 106 runners in the 8,000-meter Dan Huston Invitational at Wartburg College. He finished in 26:02, five seconds behind the winner and led the Duhawks to a second place finish in the 8,000-meter race with three top-five finishers.

Women’s Cross Country: Wartburg College junior Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, Iowa/Shenandoah HS) won the 4,000-meter Dan Huston Invitational at Wartburg. She finished in 13:12, besting the 146-runner field that by 58 seconds. Buttry led the Knights to a second place finish in the 4,000-meter race behind the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the 17th-ranked team in Division I and ahead of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the eighth ranked team in Division III.

Men’s Soccer: Loras College junior goaltender Nick Murray (Waukee, Iowa/Dowling HS) recorded his third shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Wartburg College. Murray made five saves.

Women’s Soccer: Luther College junior forward Katie Pettigrew (Farmington, N.M./Farmington HS) recorded her seventh and eighth multi-goal game of the season in victories over Simpson College and Grand View College. Pettigrew scored twice and added an assist in the Norse’s 3-1 victory over Simpson. She scored twice in a 3-2 overtime victory over Grand View.

Women’s Tennis: Cornell College sophomore Marie Schutte (Boone, Iowa/Boone HS) was named Iowa Conference Most Valuable Player after leading the Rams to a third place finish in the Conference Tournament. Schutte posted a 5-1 record during the week including two victories at #1 singles over Coe’s Ashley Peterson (6-0, 6-0 in a dual match; 6-1, 6-1 in IIAC third place match). Schutte also teamed with Emily Loewen to record victories at #1 doubles against Coe (8-4 in dual match, 8-2 at IIAC Tournament), and Wartburg (8-5 at IIAC Tournament). Schutte’s lone defeat of the week came in a doubles match against Central (8-5) at the Conference Tournament.
