WARTBURG'S MOEN AND SIMPSON'S CURRAN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College cross country runner Josh Moen (Fairbank, Iowa/Wapsie Valley HS) and Simpson College soccer player Ashley Curran (Omaha, Neb./Millard West HS) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 19.

Moen, a junior, finished second of 221 runners at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Jim Drews Invitational. Moen ran the 8,000-meter course in 24:44.7, finishing 3.7 seconds behind the winner from Division-I University of Wisconsin-Madison. Moen’s time is the second fastest time in Wartburg history.

Curran, a freshman forward, scored four goals on six shots in Simpson’s 6-1 victory over Central College. She also recorded the game winning goal in that contest.

The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week in the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week. Moen and Curran received the weekly honor in their respective sports, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Women’s Cross Country: Coe College senior Jenna Boerboom (Walnut Grove, Minn./Tracy Area HS) won Loras College’s Dr. Robert Tucker Invitational. She finished in 19:07, 25 seconds ahead of the second place finisher in the 99-runner field and led the Kohawks to the team title. Boerboom has finished in the top-five of all six races she has entered this year.

Football: Coe College senior running back Matt Wycoff (Marion, Iowa/Marion HS) had his second 200+-yard rushing performance of the season with a 205-yard, two-touchdown game against Central College. Wycoff carried the ball 35 times and scored two fourth quarter touchdowns as Coe defeated Central for the first time since 1950.

Men’s Soccer: Central College senior forward Mike Augustin (Colo, Iowa/Colo-NESCO HS) scored three goals and added three assists in two games during the week. He scored two unassisted goals and assisted on another in the Dutch’s 7-1 victory over the University of Dubuque. Augustin had a hand in all three Central goals in a 4-3 loss to Simpson College. He scored once and had two assists.

Volleyball: University of Dubuque sophomore middle blocker Jodi Thomas (Durand, Ill./Durand HS) hit .276 and averaged 3.72 kills and 1.06 blocks per game in 18 games during the week. Thomas led the Spartans to a third place finish in the Elmhurst College Invitational and a Conference victory over Luther.
