SIMPSON'S WESTPHAL AND WARTBURG'S KUEKER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Simpson College football player Kyle Westphal (Fontanelle, Iowa/Nodaway Valley HS) and Wartburg College volleyball player Amy Kueker (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 9.

Westphal, a junior defensive back, led the Storm defense in a 21-7 victory over Luther College. He recorded 11 tackles, including nine solo; forced two fumbles, recovering one; had one interception which he returned 21 yards and broke-up three passes.

Kueker, a senior right side hitter, led the Knights to their second straight Conference Tournament Championship. In three Tournament matches, shed averaged 3.64 kills, 4.82 digs and 0.45 blocks while hitting .327. She helped Wartburg to a 3-1 victory in the semifinals over the Tournament’s top seed and #10-ranked Central with a .410 hitting percentage (18 kills-2 errors-39 total attacks).

The IIAC also announced its Players of the Week for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week. Westphal and Kueker earned the weekly honors for football and volleyball, respectively, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Men’s Soccer: Wartburg College sophomore defenseman Zach Prieve (Lori, Wis./Lodi HS) scored the game winning goal at 74:05 in the Knights’ 3-2 victory over Loras College in the Iowa Conference men’s soccer Championship game. Prieve’s goal gave Wartburg its first IIAC Tournament title and first trip to the NCAA Tournament where it will face Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday in St. Peter, Minn.

Women’s Soccer: Loras College junior goaltender Erin Hall (Lindenhurst, Ill./Antioch HS) posted a 1-0-1 record in the Iowa Conference Tournament and did not surrender a goal in 165 minutes of play, making five saves. After playing a scoreless first half in the semifinal match against Cornell, she made four saves through regulation and two overtimes in the Championship match against Luther and stopped two shots in the shootout to give the Duhawks their third straight Conference Tournament title and third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Loras will host the winner of the Wisconsin-Stevens Point/Macalester match on Friday.

Men’s Swimming and Diving: Coe College senior Dustin Briggs (Jefferson, Iowa/Jefferson Scranton HS) had three top-two finishes in Coe’s dual meet against Loras College. In individual events, Briggs finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.85) and second in the 200-yard medley (1:43.80). He was also a member of Coe’s 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished second in a time of 1:37.73. He swam a 22.35 split.

Women’s Swimming and Diving: Coe College senior Katrina Schultz (Postville, Iowa/Postville HS) won three events in Coe’s dual meet against Loras College. Individually, she was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.90) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.86). She was also a member of Coe’s 200-yard medley relay team that finished in a winning time of 1:57.45. She swam a 29.75 split.
