SIMPSON'S DONNENWERTH AND COE'S MOORMAN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

November 17, 2003

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today the Simpson College football player Mike Donnenwerth (Sheffield, Iowa/SCMT HS) and Coe College swimmer Vonni Moorman (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood HS) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 16.

Donnenwerth, a senior quarterback/punter, threw for 516 yards and six touchdowns on 24-of-41 passing in Simpson’s 54-7 victory over Upper Iowa University. His six touchdowns are a new Simpson single-game record eclipsing the old mark of five set on multiple occasions. His 516 passing yards are the second most in school history, four yards shy of the school record set in 1926. Entering the NCAA Playoffs, Donnenwerth has thrown for a school record 3,189 yards and 30 touchdowns this season.

Moorman, a sophomore, had three top-two finishes in Coe’s 121-119 victory over Luther. She won the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle and was a member of the second-place finishing 200-yard medley relay team. She finished the 100-yard freestyle in 58:59, 54/100ths of a second ahead of the second-place finisher. Moorman’s winning time of 2:07.50 in the 200-yard freestyle was 6.37 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The 200-yard medley relay team finished in 1:59.75, just 43/100ths of a second behind Luther’s winning team.

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of the Week for the Conference’s four sports in competition during the week. Donnenwerth and Moorman earned the weekly honor for football and women’s swimming, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.
