CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today the Simpson
College football player Mike Donnenwerth (Sheffield,
Iowa/SCMT HS) and Coe College swimmer Vonni Moorman (Shoreline,
Wash./Shorewood HS) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of
the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 16.
Donnenwerth, a senior quarterback/punter, threw
for 516 yards and six touchdowns on 24-of-41 passing in Simpson’s
54-7 victory over Upper Iowa University. His six touchdowns are
a new Simpson single-game record eclipsing the old mark of five
set on multiple occasions. His 516 passing yards are the second
most in school history, four yards shy of the school record set
in 1926. Entering the NCAA Playoffs, Donnenwerth has thrown for
a school record 3,189 yards and 30 touchdowns this season.
Moorman, a sophomore, had three top-two finishes
in Coe’s 121-119 victory over Luther. She won the 100-yard and 200-yard
freestyle and was a member of the second-place finishing 200-yard
medley relay team. She finished the 100-yard freestyle in 58:59,
54/100ths of a second ahead of the second-place finisher. Moorman’s
winning time of 2:07.50 in the 200-yard freestyle was 6.37 seconds
ahead of the runner-up. The 200-yard medley relay team finished
in 1:59.75, just 43/100ths of a second behind Luther’s winning team.
The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of
the Week for the Conference’s four sports in competition during
the week. Donnenwerth and Moorman earned the weekly honor for football
and women’s swimming, while the following individuals were recognized
for their athletic performances.
Men’s Swimming and Diving: Loras
College junior Jon Gentry (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah
HS) won three events in Loras’ 111-108 victory over Illinois Tech.
He won the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle and was a member of
the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team. He won the 500-yard freestyle
by 29.39 seconds in a time of 5:35.34. He won the 1,000-yard freestyle
in 10:55.22, winning by 45.27 seconds. Gentry swam a 23.94 split
in the relay as the team finished in 1:35.23.
Wrestling: Wartburg College
senior Justin McClintock (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort
Dodge, HS) finished second in the 125-pound weight class at the
Harold Nichols Open. He lost 4-2 in the Championship match to the
University of Minnesota’s Bobby Lowe, who finished fifth at the
Division I National Championships last winter. En route to the Championship
match, McClintock won by fall at 1:47 over Minnesota’s Doug Jackson
and won by decision over University of Northern Iowa’s Chris Helgeson
(5-4) and Minnesota’s Mack Riter (5-1).
