BUENA VISTA'S MEGGERS AND WARTBURG'S BLIVEN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University basketball player Amy Meggers (Manilla, Iowa/I-K-M HS) and Wartburg College wrestler Dustin Bliven (Columbus Junction, Iowa/Columbus Junction HS) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 7.

Meggers, a senior forward, averaged 25.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in three contests during the week. In the Iowa Conference opener against Dubuque, Meggers scored 32 points (13-of-22 shooting) and grabbed 16 rebounds (5-11) in an 84-54 Beaver victory. In an 85-71 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan, she scored 29 points (10-of-22 shooting), grabbed 15 rebounds (5-10) and dished out four assists. Meggers completed her week with a 14-point, eight-rebound performance in a 97-51 victory over Clarke.

Bliven, a junior, finished second in the 157-pound weight class at the University of Northern Iowa Open. He won his first match by fall at 12 seconds then won four matched by decision before falling in the finals to Northern Iowa’s Nick Baima, 13-6. Baima is ranked in the top-20 in NCAA Division I. Bliven’s victories came against Kennedy King’s Curt Cannon (pin at 0:12), St. Louis-Mercy’s B.J. Nixdorf (7-1), Indiana’s Zack Hibshman (6-3), Nebraska-Omaha’s Derek Keasling (4-0), and Minnesota State-Mankato’s George Lynaugh (5-2).

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of the Week for the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week. Meggers and Bliven earned the weekly honor for women’s basketball and wrestling, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Men’s Basketball: Buena Vista University senior center Scott Weber (Audubon, Iowa/Audubon HS) averaged 22.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in two contests during the week. He shot 62.5 percent from the floor during the week on 15-of-24 shooting. In the Iowa Conference opener against Dubuque, Weber scored 24 points (9-of-13 shooting), grabbed 11 rebounds (3-8) and had two assists in the Beavers’ 101-79 victory. In Buena Vista’s 101-100 triple-overtime victory over Grand View, he scored 21 points (6-of-11 shooting), grabbed seven rebounds (6-1) and had two assists.

Women’s Swimming & Diving: Loras College freshman Molly Tomlonovic (Colfax, Iowa/Colfax-Mingo HS) won four events in the Duhawks’ 141-59 dual meet victory over Buena Vista. She won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.28 and the 100-yard freestyle in 57.27. Tomlonovic was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:47.76) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:00.81) teams.

Men’s Swimming & Diving: Loras College senior Cortney Rexroth (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine HS) won three events and finished second in another in the Duhawks’ 119-62 dual meet victory over Buena Vista. He won the 50-yard freestyle (23.19) and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.17) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.23) teams. Rexroth also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.58).
