CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Central College basketball player Jen Randeris (Audubon,
Iowa/Audubon HS) and Wartburg College wrestler Bart Mehlert
(LaPorte City, Iowa/Union HS) were named IIAC Female and
Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December
14.
Randeris, a senior center, scored 33 points on
10-of-11 shooting (91.0 percent) and grabbed 12 rebounds (7-5) in
the Dutch’s 76-50 victory over Iowa Wesleyan College. She was one
rebound shy of a double-double in the first half after scoring 25
of Central’s 41 first half points. She played just 13 minutes in
the second half. She fell one free throw shy of tying the Central
school record for free throws made in a game, going 13-of-16 (81.3
percent) from the line. Randeris also added three steals, one assist
and one block.
Mehlert, a senior, was named Outstanding Wrestler
at the Dick Walker Invitational after winning the 149-lb. weight
class. Mehlert went 4-0 at the Invitational with two pins, a technical
fall and a major decision. He opened with a pin of Loras College’s
Tim Schwan at 1:36. Mehlert then defeated University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s
Ross Badcock (technical fall; 16-0, 3:51) and Coe College’s Jared
Creason (major decision, 8-0) before pinning Loras’ Charlie Bishop
at 1:06 in the Championship match.
The IIAC also announced on Monday its Players of
the Week for Conference’s five sports in competition during the
week. Randeris and Mehlert earned the weekly honor for women’s basketball
and wrestling, while the following individuals were recognized for
the athletic performances.
Men’s Basketball: Cornell
College sophomore forward Dan McClanahan (Davenport,
Iowa/Assumption HS) scored 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds (4-12)
in the Rams’ 79-77 victory over Waldorf College. McClanahan shot
14-of-20 from the floor (70.0 percent) and also added three assists
as Cornell won its first game of the season.
Women’s Swimming & Diving: Coe
College sophomore Vonni Moorman (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood
HS) won three events in the Kohawks’ dual victory over the University
of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She won the 500-yard freestyle (5:42.85),
the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:29.92) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:22.64).
Men’s Swimming & Diving: Coe
College junior Blake Borrett (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson
HS) recorded three season-best times in the Kohawks’ dual loss to
the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He won the 50-yard freestyle
and the 100-yard freestyle in times of 22.47 and 50.36, respectively.
He was also a member of the second-place finishing 400-yard freestyle
relay team that finished in 3:28.70.
