WARTBURG'S HINSCHBERGER AND BERNER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College wrestler Dustin Hinschberger (Belle Plaine, Iowa/Belle Plaine) and Wartburg basketball player Amanda Berner (Calamus, Iowa/Calamus-Wheatland) have been named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 9.

Hinschberger, a junior, went 4-0 in the 141-pound weight class at the Lone Star Duals including a victory over a Division I wrestler and two victories over Division II wrestlers. After forfeit victory in a dual against Missouri Baptist, Hinschberger registered a 10-6 victory over Juan Mora of Division I Cal State Fullerton. He then posted a 7-3 victory over the sixth-ranked wrestler in Division II, Wade Bramlitt of Central Oklahoma. Hinschberger’s final victory was an 8-6 decision over Matt True of Division II Nebraska Kearney.

Berner, a junior center, averaged 22.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game in two contests during the week. She shot 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the floor and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line in a loss to Simpson (86-45) and a victory over Dubuque (75-67). She posted her 21st career double-double against Simpson, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with seven blocked shots. Against Dubuque, Berner scored a career-high 35 points, including the Knights’ first 15 of the game, and tied a school record with 14 made field goals (on 25 attempts). She also had eight rebounds and one steal.

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Performers of the Week in the five Conference sports in competition. Hinschberger and Berner received the weekly honor in their respective sports, while the following individuals were recognized for their weekly performances.

Men’s Basketball: Loras College senior guard Jeff Ludovissy (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) averaged 20.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in two contests during the week. He shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field including 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from behind the three-point arc, and 75.0 percent (3-of-4) from the free throw line in victories over Coe (70-59) and Luther (71-60). He scored 25 points, on 10-of-16 shooting (4-of-5 on threes), had two steals, one assist and one rebound against Coe. Ludovissy led four Duhawk double-digit scorers against Luther with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting (3-of-4 on threes). He also had four rebounds and four assists.

Men’s Swimming & Diving: Luther College freshman Alex Eganhouse (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) qualified for the NCAA Championships with a combined score of 441.60 in the one-meter diving event in the Norse’s 159-74 dual victory over Loras. Eganhouse, in his first year of competitive diving at any level, surpassed the NCAA qualifying mark of 435.0.

Women’s Swimming & Diving: Coe College sophomore Naomi Fottral (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) won three events in the Kohawks’ 110-91 dual victory over Augustana (Ill.). Individually she won the 200-yard medley (2:25.27) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:27.25). She also swam a 34.56 split on the second leg (breaststroke) of the winning 200-yard medley relay.
