CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Buena Vista University wrestler Adam Buthe (Sergeant
Bluff, Iowa/Sioux City East) and Buena Vista basketball player Katie
Maguire (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor) were named IIAC Male and
Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February
6.
Buthe, a senior heavyweight, won all three of his
matches during the week by fall. He pinned Morningside’s Nathan
Ploen at 4:21, Dubuque’s James Mundy at 2:12 and Division II Northern
State’s Jesse Hockley at 4:20.
Maguire, a junior guard, averaged 18.0 points,
4.5 assists and 4.5 steals per game in two contests during the week.
She shot 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the field including 6-of-9
from behind the three-point arc, and 75.0 percent (6-of-8) from
the free throw line in victories over Coe (77-59) and Central (100-78).
Against Coe, she scored 16 points (5-of-10 shooting), grabbed two
rebounds, and had two assists and three steals. Maguire scored her
1,000th career point among her 20 points (7-of-12 shooting) against
Central. She also had seven assists, six steals and a block.
The IIAC also announced on Monday its Performers
of the Week in the eight Conference sports in competition. Buthe
and Maguire received the weekly honor in their respective sports,
while the following individuals were recognized for their weekly
performances.
Men’s Basketball: Loras
College freshman forward Kyle White (Antioch, Ill./Antioch)
averaged 15.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in three
contests during the week. He shot 68.0 percent (17-of-25) from the
field and 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line in victories
over Cornell (84-65), Dubuque (79-70) and Luther (64-57). He opened
the week with 10 points (4-of-7 shooting) and eight rebounds against
Cornell. Against Dubuque, White scored a career-high 22 points (8-of-11
shooting), grabbed 11 rebounds, and had an assist, a block and a
steal. He finished the week with 13 points (5-of-7 shooting) four
rebounds, five steals and a block against Luther.
Men’s Swimming & Diving: Coe
College freshman Yoichi Ishii (Tokyo, Japan) was
named Iowa Conference Male Swimmer of the Year after winning three
individual events and two relays at the Conference Championship,
setting meet records in all five events and setting four school
records. He set meet and school records in the 400-yard individual
medley (4:20.53), the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.90), the 1650-yard
freestyle (17:06.03) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:17.74).
Ishii was also a member of the meet record-setting 400-yard freestyle
relay team (3:17.25).
Women’s Swimming & Diving: Luther
College freshman Elissa Schmidt (Claremont, Minn./Owatonna)
was named Iowa Conference Female Swimmer of the Year after winning
three individual events and four relays at the Conference Championship.
She set six meet records en route to leading Luther to its first
Conference title. Schmidt won and set Conference records in the
100-yard freestyle (53.84), the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.33), the
200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.70), the 400-yard free relay (3:46.30),
the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:13.58) and the 400-yard medley relay
(4:13.34). She also won the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.62).
Men’s Tennis: Luther
College freshman Jono Martin (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds
View) went 4-2 during the week going 2-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.
He posted straight set victories at #2 singles over players from
the #10 and #11 ranked teams in the Midwest – University of Chicago
and Wisconsin-Whitewater. He lost at #1 singles to Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
At doubles, he and partner Brad Nelson defeated Chicago and Oshkosh
at #1 but lost at #2 to Whitewater.
Men’s Track & Field: Luther
College sophomore Tyler Sherden (Rochester, Minn./John
Marshall) set the school, meet and venue record in the 400-meter
dash at the Luther Alumni Meet with an NCAA provisional qualifying
time of 49.39. He broke the school mark by 2/100ths of a second
and the venue record by 25/100ths of a second.
Women’s Track & Field: Coe
College freshman Jasmine Jones-Green (Sierra Vista,
Ariz./Buena) won three events at Cornell’s Hilltop Open. She broke
the 10-year-old school record in the 55-meter hurdles, winning in
a time of 8.7 seconds. Jones-Green also won the 400-meter dash (61.74)
and was a member of the 4x400 meter relay team (4:14.44).
