BUENA VISTA'S CAMERON AND CENTRAL'S CUNNINGHAM NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University basketball player Mike Cameron (Urbandale, Iowa/Johnston) and Central College track and field performer Beth Cunningham (Davenport, Iowa/Central) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February 13.

Cameron, a senior forward, averaged 19.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 blocks per game in three contests during the week. He shot 68.8 percent (22-of-32) from the field including 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from behind the three-point arc, and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the free throw line. He scored 14 points (on 6-of-12 shooting) and grabbed four rebounds in a 65-61 victory over Loras. In a 64-54 victory over Luther, Cameron scored 18 points (on 6-of-10 shooting), grabbed five rebounds, and had three blocks, two steals and two assists. He scored a career-high 27 point, connecting on all 10 field goals including six three-pointers, in an 80-65 victory over Dubuque. In that contest, he also had three rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.

Cunningham, a senior, won the 5000-meter run at the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolf Invitational in a time of 17:55.67. She broke the 23-year-old school record by nearly 30 seconds and topped her career-best mark by 41 seconds.

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Performers of the Week in five Conference sports in competition. Cameron and Cunningham received the weekly honor in their respective sports, while the following individuals were recognized for their weekly performances.

Women’s Basketball: Buena Vista University junior guard Katie Maguire (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor) averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game in three contests during the week. She shot 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the floor including 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from behind the three-point arc, and 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the free throw line. She scored 16 points (on 5-of-11 shooting), grabbed seven rebounds and had three assists in a 91-64 victory over Loras. In a 66-63 win over Luther, she scored 22 points (on 8-of-12 shooting), grabbed four rebounds, and had five steals and two assists. Maguire posted similar numbers in an 83-61 victory over Dubuque, scoring 22 points (on 7-of-9 shooting), grabbing four rebounds, and having five assists and two steals.

Men’s Track & Field: Loras College senior John Reilly (Marshalltown, Iowa/East Marshall) won the shot put at the Monmouth (Ill.) Fighting Scot Invitational with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 53-0.

Wrestling: Wartburg College senior Mark Sturm (Armstrong, Iowa/Emmetsburg) posted a 15-3 major decision over Buena Vista’s Bobby Flaherty at 174-pounds. The victory was Sturm’s 13th straight and third bonus-point win in his last four matches.
