WARTBURG’S HINSCHBERGER AND COE’S ZIMMERMAN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College wrestler Dustin Hinschberger (Belle Plaine, Iowa/Belle Plaine) and Coe College basketball player Holly Zimmerman (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February 20.

Hinschberger, a junior, was named Dick Walker Outstanding Wrestler of the IIAC Wrestling Championship. The top-seed at 141-pounds went 3-0 with two major decisions and a technical fall. He defeated Dubuque’s Ben Swan, 14-1, in the quarterfinals and 2004 Outstanding Wrestler Dustin Brewer of Simpson, 10-2, in the semifinals. Hinschberger won the championship match over Coe’s Mark Carey by technical fall, 20-5.

Zimmerman, a senior guard, set the school record for points scored in a season (with 345 points) after averaging 19.0 points along with 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game in two contests during the week. She shot 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from the floor and 95.0 percent (19-of-20) from the free throw line in an overtime victory over Luther (77-69) and a victory over Central (57-51). She scored a career-high 25 points, had six assists, grabbed five rebounds and had three steals as the Kohawks defeated Luther for the first time in nine games. In the regular season finale against Central, Zimmerman scored 13 points, had four rebounds, three assist and one block.

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Performers of the Week in six Conference sports in competition. Hinschberger and Zimmerman received the weekly honor in their respective sports, while the following individuals were recognized for their weekly performances.

Men’s Basketball: Wartburg College senior guard Jordan Atchison (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game in two contests during the week as the Knights clinched their 20th Conference title and first since 2000-01. He shot 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the field, including 3-of-6 from behind the three-point arc, and 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line in a victory over Cornell (89-77) and a loss to Buena Vista (75-64). Against Cornell, he scored 23 points, grabbed five rebounds, and had four assists and three steals. He scored 17 points, grabbed three rebounds, and had three assists and three steals in a losing effort against Buena Vista, Wartburg’s only Conference loss of the season.

Men’s Tennis: Central College junior Nick Cochrane (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) went 4-0 during the week with a pair of victories at #1 singles and #1 doubles. In singles action, he defeated Nebraska Wesleyan’s Andy Huls (6-3, 6-3) and Monmouth (Ill.)’s Jared Kunkle (6-1, 6-3). With partner Aaron Enderlin, Cochrane registered an 8-4 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan and an 8-6 victory over Monmouth (Ill.) in doubles play.

Men’s Track & Field: Simpson College senior Matt Albert (Dublin, Ohio/Logan) had four top-10 finishes at the Knox Invitational. He was a member of the winning 4x200 relay team (1:33.02), finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (7.96), fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.23) and eighth in the triple jump (39-5).

Women’s Track & Field: Coe College freshman Jasmine Jones-Green (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) registered three top-two finishes including an NCAA provisional qualifying mark at the University of Iowa Open. Jones-Green won the 60-meter hurdles with a PQ time of 9.08 seconds. She also finished second in the 200-meter dash (26.69) and 400-meter dash (1:01.00).
