CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Cornell College track and field performer Lynn Schneider
(Nebraska City, Neb./Nebraska City) and Wartburg College
baseball player Joel Reynolds (West Des Moines,
Iowa/Valley) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week
for the period ending Sunday, April 10.
Schneider, a senior, won three events, finished
fourth in another, set three school records and provisionally qualified
for the NCAA Championships in two events with her performance at
the Cornell Relays. She won the shot put with an NCAA PQ and school
record throw of 45-7, currently the third best distance in the nation.
She also won the hammer throw with an NCAA PQ and school record
throw of 151-11, currently 10th in the nation. Schneider won the
javelin with a school record throw of 125-1.5 and finished fourth
in the discus with a throw of 118-8.
Reynolds, a senior first baseman/outfielder, hit
.667 (8-of-12) with a home run, a double, six RBI and four runs
scored in four games during the week. After starting the week with
a 1-for-2 performance in a 7-3 win over Buena Vista, he finished
the week with three straight multi-hit games. He went 2-for-3 in
the second game of the Buena Vista doubleheader (5-2 win). Reynolds
went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in the Knights’ 3-2 win
over Coe and finished the doubleheader with a 3-for-5 performance
with an RBI and a double in a losing effort (4-3 in 10 innings).
The IIAC also announced on Monday the Performers
of the Week for the six Conference sports in competition during
the week. Schneider and Reynolds were recognized in their respective
sports, while the following individuals were recognized for their
athletic performances.
Men’s Golf: Loras College
senior Pete Weber (Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque)
won his second straight tournament as he shot a 36-hole score of
140 at the Wartburg Invitational. He was in 12th place after shooting
a 72 on the first day then shot the Tournament’s low round with
a 68 on the second day to win by one stroke. Finishing four-under-par
also marks Weber’s second sub-par Tournament this year.
Softball: Central College
senior pitcher Corrie Schmidt (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny)
went 2-0 during the week with 11 strikeouts and did not allow a
run in 14 innings. She threw her second career no-hitter and struck
out six in Central’s 9-0 victory over Dubuque. In a 2-0 win over
Loras, Schmidt surrendered just four hits and struck out five batters.
Men’s Tennis: Coe College
junior Ryan Yao (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley)
went 5-1 during the week including 2-1 at #1 singles against ranked
individuals in three matches against ranked teams. He defeated the
42nd ranked national player Andrew Danos of Goucher (7-5, 7-6) and
the 22nd ranked player in the Atlantic South region Tyler Robinson
of Salisbury (6-3, 6-2). Yao’s lone loss was a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to
Mary Washington’s Paul Bristow, the seventh-ranked player in the
nation. In doubles play with partner Jake Michael, he posted 8-2
victories over Mary Washington and Salisbury, and an 8-3 win over
Goucher. Mary Washington is ranked eighth nationally, Salisbury
is ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region and Goucher is ranked
13th in the Atlantic South.
Men’s Track & Field: University
of Dubuque junior Daunta Peterson (Tampa, Fla./Howard
W. Blake) led the Spartans to their first meet win in over a decade
as he won two events and finished third in another at the Cornell
Relays. Peterson won the 100-meter dash in 11.0 seconds and ran
the second leg (10.0 second split) of the winning 4x100 relay in
42.6 seconds. He finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.63).
