COE’S JONES-GREEN AND SIMPSON’S PARKER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Coe College track and field performer Jasmine Jones-Green (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) and Simpson College track and field performer Ross Parker (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, May 8.

Jones-Green, a freshman, won the Iowa Conference heptathlon with an NCAA provisional qualifying and school record score of 4520 points. She recorded the top mark in five of the seven events, had the second-best mark in one event, fifth-best mark in one event and 13th in the final event. Her 200-meter dash (25.58 seconds), 800-meter run (2:24.64), 100-meter hurdles (15.21 second) and long jump (5.38 meters) performances were tops among the 13 competitors. Jones-Green was second in the shot put (9.87 meters) and tied for fifth in the high jump (1.49 meters). She threw the javelin 21.37 meters.

Parker, a senior, won two events, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in both, and finished fourth in another at the Simpson Invitational. He won, and for the second week in a row broke the school shot put record with a throw of 55-11.75, winning the event by nearly seven feet. He also won the discus with a career-best throw of 162-4, winning the event by 16 feet. Parker also finished fourth in the hammer with a mark of 146-0.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Performers of the Week for the four Conference sports in competition during the week. Jones-Green and Parker were recognized in women’s and men’s track and field, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Baseball: Simpson College junior third baseman Chris Cyronek (Omaha, Neb./Millard South) hit .688 (11-for-16) with a double, six RBI and four runs scored in five games during the week. He went 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored in a 16-8 victory over Grinnell. In the first game of a Conference doubleheader sweep of Dubuque that clinched the Storm a berth in the IIAC Tournament, he went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Cyronek went 2-for-2 with an RBI and 3-for-4 with a run scored in regular season ending losses to Gustavus Adolphus (5-2, 8-5).

Softball: Wartburg College freshman first baseman Ashley Rogers (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) hit .833 (10-for-12) with three doubles, a home run, five RBI and five runs scored in four games during the week. She went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 6-0 victory over Wisconsin-LaCrosse. In the nightcap vs. LaCrosse, an 8-1 victory, she went 2-for-2 and scored one run. Rogers went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the twin-bill opener against Dubuque (7-1 win), and finished the season with a 3-for-3, two doubles, two runs scored, one RBI performance in the second game against Dubuque (13-4 victory).
