May 16, 2005

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College track and field performers Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, Iowa/Shenandoah) and Josh Hauser (Union, Iowa/BCLUW) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, May 15.

Buttry, a senior, successfully defended her Conference titles in the 800-meters (2:15.68), 1,500-meters (4:32.37), and 5,000-meters (16:17.31), earning IIAC women’s outdoor track and field Most Valuable Performer. She automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship and set stadium records in the 1,500 and 5,000, and provisionally qualified in the 800. Buttry, who also was the Conference indoor track and field MVP this year, won all three events every year of her collegiate career.

Hauser, a junior, earned IIAC men’s outdoor track and field Most Valuable Performer taking home the title in three events including the 200-meters (21.67), the 400-meters (47.91) and the 4x400 relay (3:18.36). He also placed second in the long jump (7.00m) and was a member of the fourth-place 4x100 relay team (42.14). Hauser, who was also the Conference indoor track and field MVP this year, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 200-meters and the long jump.

The IIAC also announced on Monday its Performers of the Week for the Conference’s three sports in competition. Buttry and Hauser were recognized in their respective sports while Wartburg’s Matt Scherbring (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware) was named IIAC Baseball Player of the Week.

Scherbring, a junior pitcher, threw 17.1 innings in two games, struck out 12, allowed just 10 hits and two runs in leading the top-seeded Knights to the Iowa Conference baseball Tournament title. In the opening game against sixth-seeded Dubuque, Scherbring did not factor in the decision of the 3-2 loss but he pitched 10 innings, allowed six hits and two runs while striking out five. In the Championship game, pitching on two days rest, he threw 7.1 innings of four-hit shutout ball, struck out seven Simpson batters and walked just one in a 9-0 victory.
