CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Luther College soccer player Katie Pettigrew (Farminton,
N.M./Farminton) and Luther football player Tyler Sherden
(Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) were named IIAC Female
and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October
31.
Pettigrew, a senior forward, became the NCAA Division
III all-time leader in career points and tied the national career
goals scored record with a four goal-nine point week. She scored
on a penalty kick in a 2-1 victory over Loras, moving the Norse
into first-place in the Conference. In a 5-0 Conference-clinching
victory over Buena Vista, Pettigrew scored three goals and added
an assist moving her career totals to 121 goals and 291 points.
Sherden, a sophomore running back, amassed 251
all-purpose yards in Luther’s 52-13 victory over Cornell. He had
27 carries for 161 yards including a five-yard touchdown run and
had two receptions for 19 yards. To go along with 6.0 yard per carry
and 9.5 yard per reception average, Sherden returned one kick for
71 yards. In six games since moving from defensive back to running
back, he has rushed for 817 yards and 11 touchdowns on 171 carries.
The IIAC also announced on Monday the Performer
of the Week in six Conference sports in competition. Pettigrew and
Sherden earned the weekly honor in their respective sport, while
the following individuals were recognized for the athletic performances.
Women’s Cross Country: Wartburg
College senior Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, Iowa/Shenandoah)
won her third straight women’s individual title at the Iowa Conference
Championship, becoming the fourth three-time Champion in Conference
history. She finished the 6,000-meter race in 20:15, 2:46 ahead
of runner-up Emily Lynch of Luther. Buttry, who was voted Conference
Most Valuable Runner by the IIAC women’s cross country coaches for
the third straight year, led the Knights to a second-place finish.
Men’s Cross Country: Wartburg
College senior Josh Moen (Fairbank, Iowa/Wapsie
Valley) won the men’s individual title at the Iowa Conference Championship,
setting the Conference 8,000-meter record despite running in strong
winds. He ran a time of 25:02, clipping 4.6 seconds off the previous
Conference record and finishing 1-minute ahead of runner-up Dan
Winder of Loras. Moen, who was voted Conference Most Valuable Runner
by the IIAC men’s cross country coaches, led the Knights to their
seventh straight Conference men’s cross country Championship.
Men’s Soccer: Luther
College sophomore defenseman Kyle Nelson (Decorah,
Iowa/Decorah) scored two goals in each of the Norse’s victories
during the week, a 4-1 victory over Loras in which he scored the
game winning goal and a 3-0 victory over Buena Vista as Luther clinched
the second seed in the Conference Tournament.
Volleyball: Wartburg
College freshman middle hitter Ashley Rogers (Dubuque,
Iowa/Wahlert) had two double-doubles, hit .303, and averaged 4.00
kills and 3.38 digs in 16 games during the week. In a three-set
Conference win over Coe, she had 11 kills and six digs. Rogers led
Wartburg to a 3-1 record at the Quad City Classic, recording 10
kills, 12 digs, three blocks and hitting .391 in the lone loss,
3-0 to Carthage. In a 3-0 win over Viterbo, she had 14 kills, nine
digs and four blocks. She hit .500 with 14 kills, five digs and
seven blocks in a 3-0 win over Brescia. Her second double-double
of the week came in a 3-1 victory over Augustana (Ill.) as she registered
15 kills and 22 digs.
