LORAS' REID AND LUTHER'S SHERDEN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Loras College swimmer Rebekah Reid (Caledonia, Ill./Rockford Guilford) and Luther College football player Tyler Sherden (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) were named IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 14.

Reid, a senior, won two individual events and a relay in Loras’ one-point loss to the Illinois Institute of Technology (105-104). Reid won the 1,000-yard freestyle by 6.77 seconds in a time of 11:22.12 and the 500-yard freestyle by 1.33 seconds in a time of 5:36.41. She was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay, swimming a 1:02.98 split as the team finished in 4:01.97.

Sherden, a sophomore running back, totaled 310 all-purpose yards in Luther’s 38-24 victory over Simpson. He rushed for 240 yards and three touchdowns on 51 carries (4.7 yard/carry), had one reception for 13 yards and two kick returns for 57 yards. Sherden finished the season with 1,057 yards and 14 touchdowns despite only playing on the offensive side of the ball for five games.

The IIAC also announced on Tuesday that Luther College senior Garrett South (Cumberland, Iowa/C&M) was named IIAC Wrestler of the Week. South went 4-0 with two falls at the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Golden Eagle Open to win the 165-pound weight class with three victories over Division I wrestlers. In the first round, he won a 5-0 decision over Northern Illinois’ Tony Carour. He pinned Wisconsin’s Zach Menne at 1:43 of the quarterfinals, won a major decision over Wisconsin-Parkside’s AJ Morgan (11-0) in the semifinals. In the Championship match, South pinned Northern Illinois’ Johnny Galloway at 5:22.
