BUENA VISTA’S BISSEN AND MAGUIRE NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University basketball players Randy Bissen (Earling, Iowa/Harlan) and Katie Maguire (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 21.

Bissen, a senior forward, recorded back-to-back double-doubles in the Beavers two opening weekend victories. He averaged 15.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks in victories over Wisconsin-LaCrosse (71-61) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (70-60). Against LaCrosse, he scored 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor (62.5 percent) and 5-of-7 from the free throw line (71.4 percent), grabbed 15 rebounds (3-12), had four assists, two blocks and two steals. Against Eau Claire, Bissen scored 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor (57.1 percent) and 6-of-10 from the free throw line (64.7 percent), grabbed 11 rebounds (4-7), had two blocks, two steals and an assist.

Maguire, a junior guard, scored a career-high 29 points, including the game-winning free throws with five seconds remaining in the Beavers’ 71-69 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan. She connected on 7-of-9 field goals (77.8 percent) including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point arc and 12-of-14 free throws (85.7 percent). Maguire also contributed three assists and one rebound in Buena Vista’s season opening victory.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Performer of the Week in each of the Conference’s five sports in competition. Bissen and Maguire earned the weekly honor in their respective sport, while the following individuals were recognized for the athletic performances.

Men’s Swimming & Diving: Luther College senior Charles Wold (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) won the 50-yard and the 100-yard freestyle in Luther’s dual victory over Coe (167-71) He swam the 50 free in 22.60, defeating teammate Michael Fedotovskskikh by 0.13 seconds. Wold finished the 100 free in 49.90, 1.78 seconds ahead of Coe’s Matt Lukes.

Women’s Swimming & Diving: Luther College freshman Elissa Schmidt (Claremont, Minn./Owatonna) won the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle in Luther’s dual victory over Coe (165-70) She posted a time of 56.03 in the 100 free, winning the event by 2.2 seconds over Coe’s Sarah Taucher. Schmidt finished the 200 free in 2:01.73, 6.3 seconds ahead of Taucher.

Wrestling: Simpson College senior Clint Manny (Peru, Iowa/Winterset) went 4-2 during the week with a technical fall and two pins. His two loses came against wrestlers from Division I Oklahoma State while he posted victories over one Division I wrestler and two Division II wrestlers. In a dual against Dubuque, Manny defeated Josh Cross by technical fall (16-0). At the University of Nebraska Omaha Open, he pinned Air Force Academy’s Josh Peterson at 1:41 in the first round. In the second round, Manny, the top ranked 149-lb. wrestler in Division III, lost a major decision to the top ranked wrestler in Division I, Oklahoma State’s Zack Esposito (11-3). Manny then pinned Division II Chadron State’s Ryan Hoffman at 2:44 and won a decision over Minnesota State-Mankato’s Jason Rhoten (7-1), the #4-ranked wrestler in Division II. In the consolation quarterfinals, he lost to Oklahoma State’s BJ Jackson (6-3).
