SIMPSON’S MANNY AND WHITON NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Simpson College wrestler Clint Manny (Peru, Iowa/Winterset) and Simpson basketball player Katelyn Whiton (Perry, Iowa/Panora) were named IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 12.

Manny, a senior, won the 149-pound title at the MacMurray Ameri-Host Open posting a 4-0 record with a fall, technical fall and major decision. In the first round, he pinned Missouri Baptist’s Robert DeLeon at 1:32. Manny then defeated Missouri Baptist’s Adrian Ortiz-Lacaden by technical fall (16-0, 5:00) and won a major decision over Truman State’s Chad Swagman (18-6). In the Championship match, Manny defeated McKendree’s Josh Blackburn (6-5).

Whiton, a freshman forward, averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals in two games off the bench during the week. She shot 56.0 percent from the floor (14-of-25) and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the free throw line in victories over Grand View (65-62) and William Penn (68-39). In 23 minutes against Grand View, she scored 21 points (8-of-14 shooting), grabbed eight rebounds (3-5), and had five steals and a block. In 17 minutes against William Penn, she scored 18 points (6-of-11 shooting), grabbed four rebounds (3-1), and had three steals, two assists and two blocks.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Performer of the Week in each of the Conference’s five sports in competition. Manny and Whiton earned the weekly honor in their respective sport, while the following individuals were recognized for the athletic performances.

Men’s Basketball: Loras College senior guard Jeff Ludovissy (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) scored 21 points, grabbed three rebounds, had three steals and two assists in the Duhawks’ 80-66 victory over Franciscan. Ludovissy shot 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the floor, including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point arc, and 8-of-11 from the free throw line.

Men’s Swimming & Diving: Luther College freshman Alex Eganhouse (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) set the school record for six dives voluntary with a point total of 259.45 in a dual victory over Minnesota State-Mankato (168-63).

Women’s Swimming & Diving: Luther College freshman Valarie Hoops (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) set school records in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events, breaking the old marks set in 1996. She won the 500-yard free in 5:23.41, breaking the previous record by 58/100ths of a second. Hoops won the 1000-yard free in 11:04:82, breaking the previous record by 10.17 seconds.
