LORAS’ DAVIS AND CLEARY NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 13, 2002.  Loras College basketball player Alicia Davis (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Loras College wrestler Paul Cleary (El Paso, IL/El Paso HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Davis, a sophomore center, averaged 17.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots per game in three contests during the week.  In the Duhawks’ victory over Coe College on Tuesday, she scored 18 points (eight-for-12 shooting), grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked six shots in 18 minutes of play.  Against Wartburg College on Friday, Davis scored eight points (four-for-seven shooting), grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots.  She finished her week with her best statistical performance.  Against Buena Vista University on Saturday, she recorded her eighth 20-plus point game of the season and her 11th double-double.  She finished with 27 points (11-for-14 shooting) and 12 rebounds in 25 minutes.  She also blocked two shots.  This is Davis’ third selection as IIAC Female Athlete of the Week, having also earned the honor for the periods ending November 18, and December 9.

Cleary, a 184-pound junior, finished with a 6-0 record at the Budd Whitehill Division III National Duals at Lycoming College.  He opened the tournament with a technical fall victory over Case Western’s Aaron Yoches at 5:39 and followed that with a major decision over Heidelberg’s Joe Kraft (14-5).  After a 6-3 victory over University of Chicago’s Bill Kpecky, Cleary recorded his second major decision, this time against Ithaca’s Jeff Edelstein (14-5).  In his final two matches of the tournament, Cleary won by decision over Ohio Northern’s Ben Dusina (5-4) and John Carroll’s Dave Lance (8-2).  With his performance at the Budd Whitehill Division III National Duals, he improved to 16-4 on the season.

For the third consecutive week, Buena Vista University’s Adam Jones (Jefferson, IA/Jefferson-Scranton HS) was selected IIAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.  Jones averaged 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per gamed in two contests.  He led the Beavers in scoring in their victories over Dubuque and Loras.  He scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds, and had three assists and one block in Friday’s victory over the University of Dubuque.  On Saturday, in 29 minutes of play, he scored 28 points on 11-for-13 shooting from the field including six-for-eight from three point land.  He also grabbed three rebounds, had two assists and one steal.
