January 21, 2002 WARTBURG’S MENNEN AND UPPER
IOWA’S WILSON
NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF
THE WEEK MOUNT
VERNON, IA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today
their Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending
Sunday, January 20, 2002. Wartburg
College basketball player Jessica
Mennen (Dumont, IA/Hampton- Dumont HS) was selected IIAC Female
Athlete of the Week and Upper Iowa University wrestler Jesus Wilson (Cuba) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week. Mennen,
a sophomore forward, averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0
steals per game in Wartburg’s victories over Upper Iowa and
Luther. Against Upper
Iowa on Friday, Mennen scored 16 points on five-for-13 shooting from
the floor and five-for-five from the free throw line.
She also grabbed seven rebounds (four offensive, three
defensive) and had two steals.
Against Luther on Saturday, she scored 19 points on
six-for-11 from the floor and seven-for-seven from the free throw
line. Mennen grabbed
six rebounds (one offensive, five defensive), had one assist and two
steals in that contest. Wilson,
a 141-pound sophomore, was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the
2002 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals after posting a 5-0 record.
He opened the Duals with a pin of Delaware Valley’s Bob
Fieger at 2:11. He
followed that performance with a 9-6 victory over Wartburg’s Will
Kelly, the number two ranked wrestler in the weight class.
Wilson then won by major decision (17-7) over John
Carroll’s Bobby Romano
and by technical fall (22-7) over Luther’s Casey
Conover. In his
final match of the Duals, Wilson defeated King’s College’s Tim
Martinez, 6-5. The
IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the
Conference’s five winter sports in competition during the week.
Mennen and Wilson earned the honors for their respective
sports and the following student-athletes were honored for their
athletic achievements. Men’s
Basketball:
Simpson College junior forward Jesse
Harris (Clive, IA/Valley HS) moved into 10th place on
the school’s all-time scoring list after averaging 19.5 points per
game in victories over Loras and Dubuque.
Against Loras on Friday, Harris scored 18 points, grabbed
five rebounds (three offensive, two defensive) and dished out two
assists. Against
Dubuque on Saturday, he scored 21 points, grabbed four rebounds
(three offensive, one defensive), and had two assists, one steal and
one block. Women’s
Track and Field:
Buena Vista University sophomore Erin
Hoffman (Audubon, IA/Audubon HS) finished first in the mile run
at the Dennis Young Invitational hosted by Buena Vista.
Her time of 5:38.40 established a school record. Men’s
Track and Field:
Simpson College senior Lucas
Carder (Indianola, IA/Indianola HS) won his fifth career high
jump title with a jump of 6-foot 6-inches at the Dennis Young
Invitational hosted by Buena Vista. -30- |
