WARTBURG’S BUTTRY AND CORNELL’S FEDDERSEN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
THREE OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 27, 2002.  Wartburg College track and field runner Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, IA/Shenandoah HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Cornell College basketball player Luke Feddersen (Davenport, IA/Assumption HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Buttry, a freshman, turned in two provisional national qualifying performances at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse Invitational.  She finished first in the 1500-meters in a time of 4:40.42, winning the event by nearly nine seconds.  Buttry was also a member of the distance medley relay team that won by almost 19 seconds in a time of 12:26.59.

Feddersen, a junior center, averaged 18.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game in three contests during the week.  He scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds (seven offensive, four defensive) in the Rams’ victory over Dubuque on Tuesday.  He also had two assists and one block in that contest.  In a double-overtime victory against Luther on Friday, he shot seven-for-11 from the floor and eight-for-10 from the free throw line en route to a 22-point, 11-rebound, two-block performance.  Feddersen guided Cornell to its sixth straight victory, including third straight on the road, with his 13-point outing on Saturday against Upper Iowa.  He also grabbed nine rebounds (three offensive, six defensive), blocked two shots and dished out one assist in that contest.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s five winter sports in competition during the week.  Buttry and Feddersen received the honor for their respective sports and the following student-athletes were recognized for their athletic achievements.

Women’s Basketball:  Wartburg College junior center Holly Mohs (Postville, IA/MFL-Mar-Mac HS) moved into sixth place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 49 points in two games during the week.  Mohs now has 1,169 points during her collegiate career.  In the Knights’ 76-58 victory over Central on Friday, she scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive) and blocked three shots.  She also had three assists and one steal.  In Wartburg’s 84-80 victory over Simpson, she scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds (one offensive, five defensive).  She also dished out two assists, had three steals and blocked one shot.

Men’s Track and Field:  University of Dubuque freshman DeAndre Bovan (Chicago, IL/South Shore HS) finished in the top-six of four events, set two school records and had one NCAA provisional qualifying mark at the Lewis University Friday Night Series.  He established a school record with his first place finish in the 200-meter hurdles, which he ran in 26.17.  He also set a school record with his 46-foot 11-inch mark in the triple jump, good for second place in the meet.  That mark is also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the National Meet in March.  Bovan also finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.14 seconds in the final) and sixth in the long jump (21-feet 3 ½-inches).

Wrestling:  Loras College’s Paul Cleary (El Paso, IL/El Paso HS), a 184-pound junior, posted a 5-0 record during the week with one technical fall and three major decisions.  In Wednesday’s dual meet against Central, Cleary won by technical fall over John McClure at 6:03.  Cleary then posted a 4-0 record at the IIAC Duals on Saturday.  He posted major decision wins over Luther’s Danny Adams (15-3), Coe’s Tyler Vander (8-0) and Buena Vista’s Adam Buthe (15-2).  He also defeated Simpson’s Jason Mitchell (5-2).  Cleary, currently ranked sixth at 184 pounds, has won 15 straight matches.
