CORNELL’S FEDDERSEN
NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF
THE WEEK MOUNT
VERNON, IA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its
Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
January 27, 2002. Wartburg
College track and field runner Missy
Buttry (Shenandoah, IA/Shenandoah HS) was selected IIAC Female
Athlete of the Week and Cornell College basketball player Luke Feddersen (Davenport, IA/Assumption HS) was selected IIAC Male
Athlete of the Week. Buttry,
a freshman, turned in two provisional national qualifying
performances at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse Invitational.
She finished first in the 1500-meters in a time of 4:40.42,
winning the event by nearly nine seconds.
Buttry was also a member of the distance medley relay team
that won by almost 19 seconds in a time of 12:26.59. Feddersen,
a junior center, averaged 18.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks
per game in three contests during the week.
He scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds (seven offensive,
four defensive) in the Rams’ victory over Dubuque on Tuesday.
He also had two assists and one block in that contest.
In a double-overtime victory against Luther on Friday, he
shot seven-for-11 from the floor and eight-for-10 from the free
throw line en route to a 22-point, 11-rebound, two-block
performance. Feddersen
guided Cornell to its sixth straight victory, including third
straight on the road, with his 13-point outing on Saturday against
Upper Iowa. He also
grabbed nine rebounds (three offensive, six defensive), blocked two
shots and dished out one assist in that contest. The
IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for each of
the Conference’s five winter sports in competition during the
week. Buttry and
Feddersen received the honor for their respective sports and the
following student-athletes were recognized for their athletic
achievements. Women’s
Basketball:
Wartburg College junior center Holly
Mohs (Postville, IA/MFL-Mar-Mac HS) moved into sixth place on
the school’s all-time scoring list with 49 points in two games
during the week. Mohs
now has 1,169 points during her collegiate career.
In the Knights’ 76-58 victory over Central on Friday, she
scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds (three offensive, five
defensive) and blocked three shots.
She also had three assists and one steal.
In Wartburg’s 84-80 victory over Simpson, she scored 25
points and grabbed six rebounds (one offensive, five defensive).
She also dished out two assists, had three steals and blocked
one shot. Men’s
Track and Field:
University of Dubuque freshman DeAndre
Bovan (Chicago, IL/South Shore HS) finished in the top-six of
four events, set two school records and had one NCAA provisional
qualifying mark at the Lewis University Friday Night Series.
He established a school record with his first place finish in
the 200-meter hurdles, which he ran in 26.17.
He also set a school record with his 46-foot 11-inch mark in
the triple jump, good for second place in the meet.
That mark is also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the
National Meet in March. Bovan
also finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.14 seconds in the
final) and sixth in the long jump (21-feet 3 ½-inches). Wrestling:
Loras College’s Paul Cleary (El Paso, IL/El Paso HS), a 184-pound junior, posted a
5-0 record during the week with one technical fall and three major
decisions. In
Wednesday’s dual meet against Central, Cleary won by technical
fall over John McClure at 6:03. Cleary
then posted a 4-0 record at the IIAC Duals on Saturday.
He posted major decision wins over Luther’s Danny
Adams (15-3), Coe’s Tyler
Vander (8-0) and Buena Vista’s Adam
Buthe (15-2). He
also defeated Simpson’s Jason
Mitchell (5-2). Cleary,
currently ranked sixth at 184 pounds, has won 15 straight matches. -30- |
