WARTBURG’S MOHS AND DUBUQUE’S STEELE NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
THREE OTHERS HONORED FOR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February 3, 2002.  Wartburg College basketball player Holly Mohs (Postville, IA/MFL-Mar-Mac HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and University of Dubuque track and field runner Basil Steele (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Mohs, a junior center, averaged 23.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 3.5 assists per game in victories over Coe and Cornell during the week.  On Friday at Coe, she scored 25 points on nine-for-11 shooting from the floor and seven-for-seven from the free throw line.  She also grabbed nine rebounds (four offensive, five defensive), dished out five assists, had four steals and two blocked shots in 28 minutes.  On Saturday at Cornell, Mohs surpassed the 1,200 career point plateau with a 23-point performance.  She also grabbed seven rebounds (four offensive, three defensive), dished out two assists, had five steals and one blocked shot in 28 minutes.

Steele, a freshman, won two events at the Hilltop Invitational hosted by Cornell College.  He automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.54 seconds in the final heat.  His time was .03 seconds shy of a University of Dubuque school record.  He did set a school record in winning the 200-meter hurdles in 25.97 seconds.  It was the first time he ran in the 200-meter hurdles and he broke the school record set the previous week by fellow freshman DeAndre Bovan.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s five winter sports in competition during the week.  Mohs and Steele received the honor for their respective sports and the following student-athletes were recognized for their athletic achievements.

Men’s Basketball:  Coe College junior forward Bruce Sain (Cedar Rapids, IA/Jefferson HS) averaged 21.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in two contests during the week.  Sain scored 21 points, grabbed 13 rebounds (four offensive, nine defensive) and had five steals in the Kohawks’ upset victory over second-place Wartburg College on Friday.  The following evening, he repeated his 21-point, 13-rebound performance while also registering one assist and two steals in Coe’s loss to Buena Vista University.

Women’s Track and Field:  Loras College senior Katie Meyer (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) had four top-three finishes at the Pioneer Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.  She ran the anchor leg of the 4x800 relay team that set a Loras record finishing in a time of 9:51.84.  She also finished first in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 9.04 seconds.  Meyer earned a second place finish in the 200meter intermediate hurdles (30.28) and a third place finish in the pole vault (8’-10 ¾”).

Wrestling:  Upper Iowa University junior Brent Meyers (Postville, IA/Postville HS) won the 184-pound weight class at the Spartan Open hosted by the University of Dubuque.  After receiving a first round bye, he pinned Tom Tajkowski of Division II Truman State University at the 3:54 mark.  Meyers followed that match with a 12-9 decision over J.D. Olivia of Division I Northern Illinois.  In the championship match, he rode out Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Nick Maliash to earn the overtime victory.
