VISTA’S JONES NAMED
IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK MOUNT
VERNON, IA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its
Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
February 10, 2002. Loras
College basketball player Alicia
Davis (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) was selected IIAC Female
Athlete of the Week and Buena Vista University basketball player Adam
Jones (Jefferson, IA/Jefferson-Scranton HS) was selected IIAC
Male Athlete of the Week. Davis,
a sophomore center, earned Female Athlete of the Week honors for the
fourth time this season after averaging 20.7 points, 17.0 rebounds
and 2.7 blocks per game in three contests during the week.
The nations leading field goal shooter shot 75.8 percent from
the field (25-for-33) in victories over Cornell and Buena Vista and
in a loss to Wartburg. Davis
scored 23 points (11-for-12 from the floor), grabbed eight rebounds
(two offensive, six defensive) and blocked two shots in 22 minutes
of play in a victory over Cornell College on Tuesday.
Against Buena Vista on Friday, she scored 19 points, grabbed
23 rebounds (10 offensive, 13 defensive) and blocked three shots. In Saturday’s loss to Conference-leading Wartburg College,
Davis recorded her second 20-point, 20-rebound, three-block
performance of the week. Friday
and Saturday marked her 16th and 17th
double-double of the season. Jones,
a senior guard, earns his first Male Athlete of the Week award after
earning Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on three previous
occasions. Jones led
Buena Vista to its third IIAC regular season championship in the
last six years averaging 30.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists
per game in three contests during the week.
On Tuesday against Wartburg, he scored 23 points, handed out
eight assists and grabbed two rebounds in an 86-76 BVU victory.
He followed that performance with a 31-point, five-rebound
(two offensive, three defensive) performance against Loras on
Friday. Jones saved his best performance of the week for last scoring
36 points, including a school record 10 three-pointers in only 23
minutes against Dubuque on Saturday.
In that contest he also had two steals and one assist.
Jones has moved into second place on the Buena Vista’s
all-time scoring list with 1,735 career points. The
IIAC also announced on Monday the Players/Performers of the Week for
each of the Conference’s five winter sports in competition during
the week. Davis and
Jones received the honor for women’s and men’s basketball,
respectively and the following student-athletes were recognized in
their sports. Men’s
Track and Field:
Simpson College senior Lucas
Carder (Indianola, IA/Indianola HS) won his fourth high jump
title in as many competitions this year.
At the Cornell Quadrangular, Carder reset his own Simpson
record with a 6’-9” jump, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
He also won the long jump competition with a 20’-6˝”
jump. Women’s
Track and Field:
Loras College freshman Pam
Orris (Dubuque, IA/Senior HS) won the 55-meter dash at the
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational with a 7.35 second run
in the final heat. She
also ran the second leg of the Loras 4x400 relay in a 58.0 split as
the team finished second in a time of 3:59.28.
Orris’ time in the 55-meter as well as the team time in the
4x400 relay are both NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Wrestling: Wartburg College 197-pound junior Alain Djoumessi (Quest, Cameroon) won three matches during the week including two by fall and one by major decision. He defeated Buena Vista’s Michael Irvin, 11-3. He then pinned Lawrence University’s Justin Seaman at 4:51 and the University of Chicago’s Sean Barnes at 0:40. Djoumessi finished the dual meet season with a 29-7 record including nine straight victories. -30- |
