LORAS’ DAVIS AND BUENA VISTA’S JONES NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
THREE OTHERS HONORED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February 10, 2002.  Loras College basketball player Alicia Davis (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Buena Vista University basketball player Adam Jones (Jefferson, IA/Jefferson-Scranton HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Davis, a sophomore center, earned Female Athlete of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after averaging 20.7 points, 17.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game in three contests during the week.  The nations leading field goal shooter shot 75.8 percent from the field (25-for-33) in victories over Cornell and Buena Vista and in a loss to Wartburg.  Davis scored 23 points (11-for-12 from the floor), grabbed eight rebounds (two offensive, six defensive) and blocked two shots in 22 minutes of play in a victory over Cornell College on Tuesday.  Against Buena Vista on Friday, she scored 19 points, grabbed 23 rebounds (10 offensive, 13 defensive) and blocked three shots.  In Saturday’s loss to Conference-leading Wartburg College, Davis recorded her second 20-point, 20-rebound, three-block performance of the week.  Friday and Saturday marked her 16th and 17th double-double of the season.

Jones, a senior guard, earns his first Male Athlete of the Week award after earning Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on three previous occasions.  Jones led Buena Vista to its third IIAC regular season championship in the last six years averaging 30.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in three contests during the week.  On Tuesday against Wartburg, he scored 23 points, handed out eight assists and grabbed two rebounds in an 86-76 BVU victory.  He followed that performance with a 31-point, five-rebound (two offensive, three defensive) performance against Loras on Friday.  Jones saved his best performance of the week for last scoring 36 points, including a school record 10 three-pointers in only 23 minutes against Dubuque on Saturday.  In that contest he also had two steals and one assist.  Jones has moved into second place on the Buena Vista’s all-time scoring list with 1,735 career points.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players/Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s five winter sports in competition during the week.  Davis and Jones received the honor for women’s and men’s basketball, respectively and the following student-athletes were recognized in their sports.

Men’s Track and Field:  Simpson College senior Lucas Carder (Indianola, IA/Indianola HS) won his fourth high jump title in as many competitions this year.  At the Cornell Quadrangular, Carder reset his own Simpson record with a 6’-9” jump, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.  He also won the long jump competition with a 20’-6˝” jump.

Women’s Track and Field:  Loras College freshman Pam Orris (Dubuque, IA/Senior HS) won the 55-meter dash at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational with a 7.35 second run in the final heat.  She also ran the second leg of the Loras 4x400 relay in a 58.0 split as the team finished second in a time of 3:59.28.  Orris’ time in the 55-meter as well as the team time in the 4x400 relay are both NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

Wrestling:  Wartburg College 197-pound junior Alain Djoumessi (Quest, Cameroon) won three matches during the week including two by fall and one by major decision.  He defeated Buena Vista’s Michael Irvin, 11-3.  He then pinned Lawrence University’s Justin Seaman at 4:51 and the University of Chicago’s Sean Barnes at 0:40.  Djoumessi finished the dual meet season with a 29-7 record including nine straight victories.
