CENTRAL’S GONZALES AND DUBUQUE’S KUEHN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK 
THREE OTHERS HONORED FOR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February 24, 2002.  Central College track and field runner Abby Gonzales (Guthrie Center, IA/Guthrie Center HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and University of Dubuque track and field jumper Bryan Kuehn (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Gonzales, a senior, set two Conference records at the Iowa Conference Invitational at Luther College on Friday and Saturday.  In automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the long jump, she set a Conference mark with a jump of 18’-9 ¼”.  She also set a Conference record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 55-meter hurdles that she ran in a time of 8.38.  As a member of the 4x200 relay team that finished fifth in the Invitational, Gonzales and her teammates set a Central record finishing in a time of 1:47.12.

Kuehn, a senior, was the only men’s athlete to win three events at the IIAC Invitational.  His 24’-1/4” jump in the long jump set a Dubuque record, an Iowa Conference record and a venue record (Luther College Regents Center).  The jump also met NCAA automatic qualifying standards.  Kuehn also set a Conference and venue record in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 47’-2 ¼”.  His third event victory came in the high jump with a mark of 6’-6”.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week.  Gonzales and Kuehn earned the honors for women and men’s Track and Field respectively, and the following individuals were honored for their performances.

Men’s Basketball:  Buena Vista University senior guard Adam Jones (Jefferson, IA/Jefferson-Scranton HS) averaged 16.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game in the Iowa Conference men’s basketball tournament, won by the Beavers.  In the opening round victory against Central, he scored 21 points, grabbed four rebounds, had one assist and one steal.  Against Loras in the semifinals, Jones scored 15 points, had two rebounds and two assists.  In the finals against Wartburg, he scored 14 points, had five assists, two rebounds and one steal.

Women’s Basketball:  Wartburg College sophomore forward Jessica Mennen (Dumont, IA/Hampton-Dumont HS) averaged 23.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game in the Iowa Conference women’s basketball tournament, won by the Knights.  In 93 minutes of play during the Conference tournament, she committed only three turnovers.  Against Cornell College in the opening round, she scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and had two steals.  Mennen followed that performance with a career-high 33-point outing against Upper Iowa University in the semifinals.  In that contest, she also grabbed 10 rebounds, had three assists, two steals and one blocked shot.  In the finals against Simpson, she scored 23 points, had six rebounds and one assist.

Tennis:  Cornell College senior Austin Reed (Urbandale, IA/Urbandale HS) recorded two victories at number one singles and two victories at number one doubles where he teamed with Tim Preston.  In singles, Reed posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Buena Vista’s Nate Stuck and a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Augustana (SD) College’s Frederik Rye-Florente.  In doubles, Reed and Preston defeated Buena Vista’s Stuck/Chris Williams, 8-6 and Augustana’s James Krueger/Aaron Weippert, 8-2.
