VISTA’S TAXTED NAMED
IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK MOUNT
VERNON, IA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its
Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
March 3, 2002. Loras
College track and field thrower Sara
Nauman (Dubuque, IA/Senior HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete
of the Week and Buena Vista University wrestler Jamie
Taxted (Duncombe, IA/Webster City HS) was selected IIAC Male
Athlete of the Week. Nauman,
a senior, won the shot put event at the Iowa State University
National Qualifying Meet on Saturday.
In a field that was predominately Division I athletes, Nauman
had a throw of 45’-9 ½”. Her
throw is the sixth longest in the nation this season and
automatically qualifiers her for the NCAA Championships to be held
at Ohio Northern University on March 8-9. Taxted,
a senior, won the 125-pound Championship at the NCAA National Meet
as the fifth seed. En
route to the title, he defeated University of Wisconsin-Eau
Claire’s Davey Starks
(6-2), Kings College’s Mitch
Marks (5-0) and Central College’s Jeremy
Hendricks (1-0). In
the Championship Match, Taxted defeated Ithaca College’s Carlos
Restrepo (7-3). Marks
was seeded fourth seed in the Meet, Hendricks was seeded eighth and
Restrepo was seeded sixth. The
IIAC also announced on Monday that Wartburg College junior Patrick
Smith (Lawler, IA/Turkey Valley HS) was selected IIAC Baseball
Player of the Week and Wartburg sophomore Alex
Six (Ainsworth, IA/Washington HS) was selected IIAC Men’s
Track Performer of the Week. Smith
appeared in four games during the week posting a 1-0 record with a
0.82 earned run average. He
earned the victory in Wartburg’s 2-1 win over Monmouth (IL),
pitching two scoreless innings and striking out four batters. Six was the top Division III finisher in the 400-meter dash at the Iowa State University National Qualifying Meet. He ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 49.65. Six was also a member of the 4x400-relay team that established a school record with a 3:14.82 run. The relay team finished first among Division III competitors and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. -30- |
