WARTBURG’S BUTTRY AND SIMPSON’S CARDER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
THREE OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending, Sunday, March 10, 2002.  Wartburg College track and field runner Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, IA/Shenandoah HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Simpson College track and field high jumper Lucas Carder (Indianola, IA/Indianola HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Buttry earned two All-American honors at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.  She won the 1500-meter run by over five seconds in a school record time of 4:31.17.  She eclipsed the old mark by (4:39.95) by over eight seconds.  Buttry was also a member of the Knights’ distance medley relay team that finished second at the Championships in 11:52.40, also a Wartburg record.  Just a freshman, Buttry is a three-time All-American, having earned similar honors in Cross Country.

Carder also earned All-American honors at the Indoor Track and Field Championships with his eighth place finish in the high jump.  His jump of 6’-8” was 3 ¾” shy of the winning jump.  Carder is the first Simpson All-American at the Indoor Nationals since 1996 and the first field event All-American for the school since 1988 when former U.S. Olympian Kip Janvrin earned the honors.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week.  Buttry and Carder earned the awards for track and field, and the following individuals were recognized in their respective sports.

Baseball:  Upper Iowa University senior pitcher/outfielder Bobby Glaser (Stockton, CA/Stagg HS) hit .625 in two games against Augsburg College.  Three of his five hits (in eight at bats) were doubles as he drove in three runs and scored four times.  Glaser also started the second game of the doubleheader.  In six innings of work, he earned the victory while surrendering five hits and four earned runs.  He struck out three batters.

Softball:  Wartburg College sophomore pitcher Stephanie Rasmussen (Audubon, IA/Audubon HS) went 5-0 with a 0.68 ERA, pitching four complete games during the week.  In 33 innings of work, she struck out 37 batters.  Rasmussen reached double-figures in strikeouts twice during the week (11 vs. Worcester State and 10 vs. Rochester Institute of Technology) and has moved into fourth on the Knights’ career strikeout list (193).

Men’s Tennis:  Cornell College senior Scott Tolliver (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) posted a 6-0 record during the week, including a 1-0 record at number three singles, a 2-0 record at number four singles and a 3-0 record at number one doubles where he teamed with senior Austin Reed (Urbandale, IA/Urbandale HS).  In his three singles matches, he lost just four points in victories over Illinois Wesleyan, Simpson and Upper Iowa.
