SIMPSON’S KULISKY AND WALKER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
THREE OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 17, 2002.  Simpson College softball player Amy Kulisky (Des Moines, IA/SE Polk HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Simpson College baseball player Andy Walker (West Des Moines, IA/Valley HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Kulisky, a junior pitcher, finished the week with a 3-0 record with one save, 37 strikeouts and a 0.30 ERA in four games.  In her first game of the week, a 6 2/3-inning relief appearance against Westminster (PA), she struck out 12 batters and surrendered just one hit en route to the victory.  She followed that performance with a three-inning relief stint against the College of New Jersey in which she surrendered one earned run and struck out four batters, earning the save.  Kulisky made the start in her final two appearances of the week, against 20th ranked Cortland State and eighth ranked William Patterson.  In each contest, she posted complete game shutouts as Simpson won both games by identical 2-0 scores.  Against Cortland State, she struck out 13 and surrendered just two hits.  Against William Patterson, she struck out eight and allowed five hits.

Walker, a senior infielder, hit .591 (13-22), scored five runs and drove in four in six games.  He had four multi-hit games including a 4-for-4 outing in the first game of a doubleheader against Wittenberg.  In that contest, he scored twice and had one RBI.  He went 3-for-4 with a triple in a loss to Marian (WI) and collected two hits (a double, a homerun) in a loss to Baldwin-Wallace in which he scored twice and drove in one.  In game two of the Wittenberg doubleheader, Walker had a double and homerun, scored twice and drove in one.  His RBI proved to be the game winning run as Simpson Head Coach John Sirianni won his 400th career game.  Defensively for the week, playing second and third base, he committed just two errors in 24 chances.

The IIAC also announced the Player of the Week for the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week.  Kulisky and Walker earned the honor for softball and baseball respectively, and the following individuals were honored for their achievements.

Tennis:  Cornell College junior Tim Preston (Iowa Falls, IA/Roland Story HS) won all three of his matches during the week including one at number two singles, one at number one doubles and one at number three doubles.  In his singles match against Wartburg College, he posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory.  Against Wartburg in doubles, he paired with Zach Heindel (Janesville, WI/Craig HS) for an 8-5 victory at number three.  Preston teamed with Matt Smith (Cedar Rapids, IA/King George HS) at number one doubles for an 8-2 victory over the University of Dubuque.

Men’s Track and Field:  Wartburg College senior Jason Huegel (Ionia, IA/New Hampton HS) finished first in the javelin at the Rhodes College Invitational.  He provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship and set a school record with a throw of 187’-11” as he won the even by over 28 feet.

Women’s Track and Field:   Wartburg College freshman Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, IA/Shenandoah HS) automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 5000-meters with her performance at the Rhodes College Invitational.  She finished first in a school record time of 17:00.82 and won the race by 1:26.
