COE’S BARNES AND DALBEY NAMED
IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

THREE OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 24, 2002.  Coe College tennis player Nick Barnes (Cedar Rapids, IA/Washington HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Coe College softball player Jamie Dalbey (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Barnes, a sophomore, posted a 5-1 record during the week including a 3-0 record at number one singles and a 2-1 record at number one doubles.  He posted singles victories over Alcorn State (6-2, 7-6), Mississippi College (6-3, 6-1) and Spring Hill College (1-6, 7-6, 6-4).  Barnes and doubles partner Nick Frank (Waterloo, IA/West HS) posted victories over Mississippi College (8-6) and Spring Hill (8-3) but suffered an 8-3 loss to Alcorn State.

Dalbey, a senior second baseman, hit .438 in 10 games with 14 hits in 32 at bats.  She registered four multi-hit games including a 3-for-4 performance against William Patterson, two 2-for-3 performances (against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Benedictine) and a 2-for-4 performance against Fairleigh Dickinson.  Dalbey also drove in five runs and scored nine times during the week.  Defensively, she committed just one error in 54 chances (.981 fielding pct.).

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s five spring sports in competition during the week.  Barnes and Dalbey earned the weekly honors for men’s tennis and softball, respectively and the following individuals were honored for their achievements.

Baseball:  Simpson College senior center fielder Tony Coppola (West Des Moines, IA/Dowling HS) hit .565 (13-for-23) in six games.  He also drove in five runs and scored four.  Coppola had four multi-hit games, four doubles and five stolen bases during the week.

Men’s Track and Field:  Loras College sophomore Marcus Murphy (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny HS) finished first in the 10,000-meters at the Loras/Luther Dual.  His 31:09.80 broke a 12-year old venue record despite the cold and windy conditions in which the race was run.

Women’s Track and Field:  Wartburg College senior Brianne Schoonover (Fredericksburg, IA/Fredericksburg HS) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with her first place run in the 200-meters at the Wartburg Open.  Her time of 25.36 was just 28-hundredths of a second shy of the school record.  She was also a member of the winning 4x100-relay team (49.53) and the 4x400-relay (4:13.37) while running anchor on the 4x800-relay team that finished second (9:43.78).
