UPPER IOWA’S GLASER AND CENTRAL’S HYSELL NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
THREE OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today the Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 31, 2002.  Upper Iowa University baseball player Bobby Glaser (Stockton, CA/AA Stagg HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Central College softball player Libby Hysell (Colfax, IA/Colfax-Mingo HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Glaser, a center fielder/pitcher, finished the week with a .483 batting average with 14 hits in 29 at bats in seven games.  During the week, he drove in 18 runs and scored 15 while hitting four doubles and five homeruns.  His top two performances during the week came in a 20-9 win over Edgewood College and a 28-16 loss to Macalester College.  Against Edgewood, he went 3-for-5 with three homeruns and eight RBI.  Against Macalester, he went 4-for-6 with two homeruns and six RBI.  On the mound, he pitched a complete game, four-hitter in a 22-2 victory over MacMurray College.  He struck out 10 en route to his second victory of the season.

Hysell, a junior pitcher, appeared in four games with two starts.  She posted a 2-0 record with two saves and surrendered just one earned run in 14 innings (0.50 ERA).  She struck out 17 batters and allowed just five hits.  During the week, Hysell won both of her starts including a no-hitter over second ranked St. Mary’s in which she struck out eight batters.  She surrendered her lone run on five hits in a victory over Illinois Wesleyan.  Prior to her performance against Illinois Wesleyan, she pitched 11 2/3 innings of no-hit softball.  She earned saves against Webster and Gustavus Adolphus.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for five Conference sports.  Glaser and Hysell earned the weekly honors for baseball and softball, respectively, and the following student-athletes were honored for their performances.

Men’s Golf:  Loras College senior Bob Gross (Racine, WI/Horlick HS) finished first among 15 golfers at the Webber International University Dual.  Gross shot a 73.

Men’s Track and Field:  Central College senior Chris McCullough (Pleasantville, IA/Pleasantville HS) finished first in the long jump at the Monmouth Invitational with a jump of 22’-6 ¾”.  In addition, he was a member of the first place 4x100 relay team (42.44) and a second place finisher in the 200-meters (22.81).

Women’s Track and Field:  Simpson College senior Becky Jolly (Pleasantville, IA/Pleasantville HS) finished third in the 100-meter hurdles at the Truman State Open in 15.80.  She was the lone Division III student-athlete in the Finals.  In addition, Jolly finished eighth in the 400-meters (1:05.63) and 10th in the 200-meters (28.00).
